Just spent a bunch of time swapping out an internal slave for an external slave set up on an AX-15/ 4.0 in an XJ.

Only one problem- Now that I have the thing back together the clutch won't engage! Bled the hydraulics but no shifting with the
engine running. Pumping the pedal doesn't help. Won't engage at all.

I'm sure I put the clutch pack in flywheel side to flywheel so some questions come to mind: What else can go bad?

Is it possible to put the fork in a bind when mating the engine and tranny?

Can you test the clutch manually by working the fork through the slave hole? How hard and far would you have to press the fork in?

I'm also not sure if I bled the slave right. Haynes says to compress the slave with clamp and bleed with pedal. That what I did. Is
there more to this? Also- does the bleed screw face up or down when installed on the bellhousing.

Anyone had the joy of dealing with these symptoms before? I could sure use some guidance about now. I'd hate to have to tow this

Doesn't sound like you bled it.

Bleeder always has to be on top - lets the air out.

When you press the pedal, does the slave move?

Yes: If the slave moving, but not disengaging the clutch, there's something wrong inside the bellhousing - maybe the clutch is in backwards (I know what you said, but we've all done it). Maybe the fork came off the throwout bearing?

No: Keep bleeding it. Is your master good?

Hey Mo,

I'm buying a rebuild kit for the slave today to eliminate it as a suspect. Master is new and has enough pressure to squirt fluid across the shop.

The hydraulic system was swapped in with the bell housing- master and slave were probably dry when I started bleeding. Any trick to getting fluid into the master? Ever "bench bleed" the system?

Forks is on the Throw Out bearing which is on the bearing retainer. How far should the slave push in the fork? Is there some way to manually check the clutch action?

Any help you can give would be great- I only want to go back in there as a last resort. <IMG SRC="smilies/pissed.gif" border="0">
