Post AX-15

I am considering swapping in an AX-15 for the Peugot in my 87 Wrangler. If I use the bellhousing for the AX-15, will it bolt to my 258? Guy at tranny shop today told me it wouldn't go, something about the dowel pins wouldn't line up, but he also kept saying he used an AX-5 and bellhousing. When I told him the AX-15 was used on 6 cylinder and AX-5 on 4 cylinder, he told me trannies were the same, just different gear ratios. I also know I will need to change the input shaft on my t/case to 23 spline to fit the AX-15. Anyone done this swap?

You will also need a new clutch slave cylinder (external), as the peugot used an internal setup. The 151 4-banger slave cylinder works fine.

Thumbs up

Ive actuely done this swap its an easy swap..the guy you talked to is an idiot and knows nothing dont ever let him work on your Jeep. You just need every thing that comes with the Ax-15 and its a direct bolt up, You just need to swap out the pilot bearing on the back of the engine to fit the Ax-15 its all simple and strait forward trust me I was a little affraid of the swap myself, As for the transfer case swap just get the transfer case already bolted to the Ax-15 its so much easyer. e-mail me if you have some questions..

Thanks mangled. On another board I posted a similar question and guy said he had the complete setup (b/h, tranny, tcase) and he would let go of it for a grand. Is this reasonable? I have no idea what a used tranny/tcase like that should go for.

Thats a fair price. I picked one up for $100 local and parted it out and made a killing on e-bay... Sh*t there must have to be gold dipped during shipping. People pay double what something is really worth because its on (please bow your heads) E-bay (angelic ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh music)

I picked up a used ax-15 for $200. Just check around and you an find a deal. I think the bell, tranny, tcase combo should go for $500 max IMO.

I know a guy here in VA looking to sell his np231 for $100.

One thing i noticed though, when i was doing my 6 cyl swap, the output shaft on the AX-15 is larger than the Peugot....(i.e. the peugot 231 wont work on the ax-15, unless you swap the input shaft.)Both were 23 splined though

I did this swap as well. I used a D300 with a clocking ring/spacer and it worked great. Very easy. Get the later AX15 bellhouse/pilot bearing from a '95 YJ or a TJ (for the external slave) and the Master/Slave set up from a 95 YJ or an XJ w/an AX15 and you are golden. I even did a flat skid with a little "body shaping". The 231 from the peugot won't work as stated above, but if your going to the trouble of the swap, might as well use a flipped D300 anyway or get the tcase that came with the tranny.

To re-iterate, the dude at the tranny shop doesn't couldn't poor piss out of a boot if there were directions on the heel.
