Cherokee buying advice

Dont know if this is the best place, but since yall know your stuff, I was wondering if I could get your input on this.

I found an '87 Jeep Cherokee for sale with 144k miles, one small oil leak, broken driver window, 35" Mickey Thompson Baja Claws, 8 inch suspension lift(dont know the brand), new speakers, sub and radio, some stuff on the engine replaced etc. The guy is asking $3500 for the whole shebang.

What kinda offer should I give? I dont think its worth quite that much and Id certainly like to talk him down if at all possible. I could really use a beater to play with instead of abusing my daily driver, as much as Id enjoy turning it into a trail-proven truck.

Snap. My bad. Can a mod help me move this thread to a forum where its appropriate here? I have no knowledge base to go off of where I live and only know what I get from lurking before I started posting.

I obviously don't know too much about Texas prices but it seems kinda steep for an '87 from what i've seen on here.
I'd be looking for a '91 up XJ with the 4.0 HO engine. Search Renix and you'll see why.
8" lift is fawkin high for a Cherokee, even on 35"s. I'm running 2,5" on mine.

You need to figure out what else he did when he lifted that thing. If everything else is stock...well, it's no good.

Search the XJ TOTM threads, and develop a list of things that others have done, or are planning to do, and Why the mods were considered necessary. Assuming the 8" of lift on the Jeep you're considering was done correctly--meaning frame reinforcement, long arm suspension, double-Cardin rear drive-shaft, upgraded TC, upgraded front/rear axles, no lift blocks in rear (rear was stock leaf springs--still leaves?), aftermarket springs in front, heavy duty bumpers front/rear with front winch (or mount), quality of work, etc. If all of these mods exist, it may be worth $3500. If it's otherwise stock, but booger-fabbed to get 8" of lift, then it's worth less than an otherwise stock XJ with body and interior in similar condition to the one your looking at; correcting other people's bad builds are expensive.

Ditto on the above posts. Look for a 91 & later. I prefer 91-95. The last 93 I bought was $650. The one before that I paid $1200. That would leave you almost $2400-3k to do upgrades vs. what you are thinking of buying and you would have a much better start. Keep looking- there are good deals out there.

Don't buy it!!!!!!!!!!!

For that much you can get an '01

I paid $400 for my '91 rusty and beat. My buddy got his '96 for $550 that needed a CPS..

Stay away from anything less than a 1991.. Renix sucks and so does everything else on them. CAD, Styling, interior...

Thanks for everyones advice. The guy wouldnt budge on his price at all, had no maintenance records, and knew very little about the cherokee. On top of all that he was a total dick. So I told him off.

Ended up buying a beater toyota, as much as I like the Cherokee body style.
