Have you done any test drives? It really comes down to personal preference. My buddy has a 4 door Rubi all stock minus the winch. It's nice with the extra room in it, and we took it wheeling on level 3 and 4 trails, sand dunes, rivers, etc. Very capable for being stock, even with the added wheel base.

My opinion would be the TJ unlimited. What do you plan to do with it? DD and weekend wheeler? What kind of wheeling?

I have a 09 Rubicon Unlimited on 37's and 4.5" lift. And tons of other goodies.
Really like it and very capable. Have several friends with buggies on 42's and I am able to keep up with most trails they do. Only thing I won't attempt is obvious shit that will fuck up my ride, all else it does real well.

The 3.8 is rather gutless. Depending on your desired tire size, you may not be thrilled with the acceleration it provides. The 3.6 in the 2012 model is supposed to be much better, but I have not yet driven one.

Here's my thoughts on the subject:

04 LJ--only available with the 42rle dog auto
05/06 LJ--available with the 42rle or NSG370 6 speed (awesome tranny) but the 4.0 from those two years has known OPDA issues

07-11 JK--42rle or NSG370, lethargic 3.8, awesome axles
'12 JK--awesome motor and new auto or NSG370 manual, awesome axles

Drive them all. If it were me right now, I'd get the '12 JK but I already have an 04 5 speed TJ that I'm very happy with. The TJ platform is simpler and easier to work on and under but the JKU will reliably run 37's easier.

I agree, but with a superchips programmer and 5.38 gearing it brings it back to liveable standards.
I haven't driven a Jeep with the new Pentastar engine, so cannot respond to that.
If I were to do it again, I would probably buy a LJ and turn it into a trail only rig with some weekend DD from time to time.

I have wondered if re-gearing and a tuner/ bolt-ons would bring a little power back and be livable with say, 35-37" tires. The other option besides a motor swap would be a super charger but they are $$$.

From the stock JKs I've driven, power was ok for a manual trans 2 door, but unimpressive with an auto or a 4 door model.

We just sold my wife's YJ on 37's and got an 05LJ Rubicon that we put a 2" coil lift,1" body/motor mount lift with a Tummy Tuck and 33's. We LOVE IT!!! Great DD and weekend play toy for the scenic stuff.

x4 on the LJ Rubi. I've got an 06 with longarms and coilovers that originally had the 4.0L/NSG370. I wheeled mine with 37"s, stock housings, 4.88s, and chromo shafts. It did great and I never broke anything. I think the wheelbase on an LJ is just about perfect.

There is a fix for the OPDA problem if you are a little mechanically inclined.

I have an 05 Rubi (w/6 speed) with a 2" lift and a few other mild mods. I somewhat DD it and take it off the pavement a couple times a month. I'm very satisfied with it.
