I'm sure plenty will disagree on this but I don't think the Dana 44 is much of an upgrade over the Dana 30. I ran 36 iroks on a Dana 30 and everytime I broke something it was just an outer stub or at the joint. Had the repair time down to about 15 mins and $15(axle from u pull). I ran 37" Mt/rs old style on my built Dana 44. I freshened the whole thing including gears, chromos, and super joints. I broke two stubs and an inner, ring gear, and locker. I was running 5:13 gears which could've been the reason I broke more buti seemed to break a lot more crap. My Dana 30 handled tellico twice(and a bunch of other places) while my Dana 44 failed at Harlan, coal creek etc. etc. etc. it wasn't long before I ended up with a 60 and converting my rear 9" into a 709.
I also prefer the mt/r tread over any swamped tread out there. Had better luck with them in wet Midwest rocks than swampers. Not knocking your build just telling you my experience with these parts/ tires |

So far from housing to the upgraded parts in my hands have I come across anything that I would consider equal to a 30. As for the ujoints the superjoints I am sure will be an upgrade compared to my spicer 760. And with the lock outs see 25% of the wear as my past axle set up. Have you ever wheeled Cliffs Insane Terrain. That's where 75% of my wheeling takes place. It has a starnge clay that reminds me of redclay. The mtr/k did ok. But I am sure the Swampers side bite will help me get a bit further before either getting packed up or spinning either way a loss of traction. If I make mistakes or bad decisions I will gladly update thread. I will wheel this summer and post up after thought. |

Looks great. I'm certainly contemplating this build myself on my 2005 LJ. I want to run 35's and not carry a trailer full of spares. I've never broken my 30, so I think a 44 with some good shafts would be plenty to handle 35's and street duty.
Best of luck, I'll be keeping an eye on this. Double win is the guys in OK where you got your axle are not too far from me.

Along the way I picked up 2 f150 HP44 for spare parts. One was a hundo and the other was 125. I used calipers for cores. I sold the axle shafts for 60 a set . So I can use the hubs and have a spare set and 2 sets of spare lock outs. Hindsight 20/20. I should have ordered the master rebuild kit since the install kit doesn't come with inner outer pinion oil slingers or the pinion baffle. I sourced the slingers from complete offroad which arrived promptly. The baffle however I am waiting on from 4wheel parts. I tried to remove one out of the spare housings but had no luck. However whim count I will use as start point and will make set up bearing and race.

spicer part number for HP44 baffle. This helps pool the oil on the pinion bearing. Along with the inner and outer oil slingers didn't come with the standard installation kit. But would have come with master overhaul kit along with seals.
