I just bought this wagoneer to build it for my Hunting and fishing jeep, mountian use basicly. It has a AMC 20, I have read that the AMC 20 Is not very strong. can I build it to be stronger? I am new at this so every Idea is very appreciated. I have a 3in body lift waiting to be put on and adding a 4in suspention lift. Body work is almost complete, cann't wait to hit it. thanks

If you want this to fish and hunt then leave it stock. Your 20 is fine. If you want to wheel, then delete this post and start reading.

this is a very tough site. you are going to get your ass lit up with a rookie question like that. let your skin toughen up and deal with it. the majority of folks here want to know how to repair (or brag about) a busted d60 cuz they are that tough on their rigs. I would look to JU for any more basic question
for your cherokee, if you want to do any mods I would look at bj's offroad. they have loads of stuff for that truck. ps this ain't tuesday micky |

they are right any thing that is not "hard core" on this site gets flamed. rough croud. this is a good site for reading about tech and building a rig. so read and search. also head over to www.ifsja.com they are awsome guys and it is a FSJ only site.

It could be argued that the AMC 20 used in Wags/Cherokees/J-trucks is stronger than the Dana 44.
The weak axle is the stock CJ AMC 20 with its 2-piece axles, but the FSJ version uses 1pc axles like a Dana 44.

As to how to build it stronger... gusset and stitch weld the tubes to the center section. That's about all that can or needs to be done.

Both are plenty strong for your average hunting/trail ride. Like JonnyJ said the AMC 20 found in CJ's is the weak one. -Ted '76 Cherokee S |
