Swapping t-cases?

I'm hoping to build up a pair of 60's or a 60 and a 14 bolt this winter. Right now my jeep has the stock 6 cylinder, ax-15 and np231 t-case. It seems that ford 60's are more expensive(but the only good way to stay drivers drop) than chevy or dodge 60's(pass. drop). I'm thinking i should just save a little cash on the axle by picking up a pass. drop axle and use what i save to get a new t-case thats pass drop and stronger than the 231. I know the dana 300 is a popular option but what else would be a good swap. I want to stick with the ax-15. What can i put in hopefully without adapters, and will anything have the right spline count or should i just plan on having to swap my output shaft on the tranny? If i go with a 300 should i clock it to get it flat or is it more trouble/ expense than it is worth. I know this is kinda newb but i guess thats ok for this part of the forum. if not let me know.

AX-15 to D300 thread or here

Simple answer, you can go AX-15/D300 with a cheap spacer that will also serve as a clocking ring.

Are there any other cases i should look into or is the 300 the best way to do it. How flat of a skid will i be able to use with just a 1 inch body lift or should i just plan on cutting out and re-doing the floor to fit it. Any idea what i should expect to pay for a dana 300?

Send a message via Yahoo to yj-mule
I struggled with the same issues originally for my YJ. I am currently working out similar issues with my YJ trying to save where I can. I am considering the NP205 as my Tcase. The ford versions have drivers drop, and the round bolt pattern as far as I can tell. In addition a future Dodge NV4500 tranny swap is possible with an advanced adapter adapter.

To help in my decision making I called advanced adapters and the guy that answered the phone helped me work out all the info regarding input shafts, clocking, and adapters that were available on the marked for my application.

Hope this helps.

If you're going passenger drop front axle then the Dana 300 is going to be one of your best bets. It will bolt up to the AX-15 (although I would seriously recommend moving away from the AX-15) and can easily be clocked up to completely flat. It's gear-driven, and the 4:1 is pretty cheap. Of course there's always an Atlas.

I am doing about the same thing. I went with a Chevy front 60 for a few reasons. The Chevy knuckles are stronger, upgrading the Chevy 60 to 35 spline outers is a drop in, they are cheaper and easier to find than the 78-79 Ford 60.

I am using a D300. They are very strong, gear driven, have the correct bolt pattern for the AX15, and are pass drop. The 4:1 kits are cheaper, its shorter than an atlas, easily twin sticked, and you can pick one up for about $150 if you keep your eyes open.

I do plan to go with a better(stronger and lower geared) tranny, but not for now.

If your thinking of an Atlas... I'd wait on it. With the 5.0 and the new 6.0, and the 4sp coming in the future... the prices should drop. They are claming the 4sp will be under $3000... so I cant see the 2sp staying close to $2500. But what do I know!

I don't have the money to swap trannies right now too, that will have to come later. I will probly do a V8 and auto swap in the next few years, but for now its staying 4.0/ ax15. Sound like a 300 is my best bet since 4:1 gears and twinsticks will be easier to find later on. Are all 300's the same or are some different? Most older jeeps that didn't have that quadratrac crap had 300's right? did anything else come with a 300?

scouts had a D300 as well, but that one has a different bolt pattern, and when you can find one it costs more.

You want a CJ D300. These had a long and a short output version. Either one will work.
