NV3550 to AMC 304

Ok, got a few questions about the NV3550. I’m looking for a trans for a DD CJ-5 that will be running 35”/36” tires and 4.88 gears. The jeep will see mild offroad use, but mostly city and highway.

Has anyone or does anyone know how to mate the NV3550 up to an AMC 304?

Also, I’m assuming that the NP231 is a direct match for this transmission, is this correct?

Jeep nv3550 is stock 23-spline np231. You would likely be better off running a d300, which will bolt on with no spacer required (unlike the AX-15). (Assuming you're running stock axles, that would match the pass drop axle.)

258, 304, 360, 401, 4.2L, 4.0L, all have the same block bolt pattern, so bellhousing will bolt up. Potential issue would be clutch disk and pilot bushing. The nv3550 also uses a hydro clutch, so be sure to grab the master & slave cylinders. You'll have to modify your clutch setup to use the master.

Won't a 3550 be too long for a CJ-5?

Naw , We have a crawler here that runs a cj2a ford 302 c4 and a dana 20 with a ford 9 in the rear. If he can get away with a V8 and a auto in a CJ2a then a 3550 isnt too long for a 5

Rear driveline will be about 10 or 11" long with a D300 and the 3550.

Advance adapters makes a pilot bushing that will work.

Biggin,

I am looking at putting a NV3550 in my CJ7. Right now I am swapping in a 350 and have the D300. Let me know what you have and we might be able to work something out. Thanks.
