Drivetrain Decisions
I am looking to replace my 231 with a Dana 300 in my 94 YJ... Future plans call for either a 302 or 351, once the 4.0 calls it quits. What 5-speed manual tranny would you guys recommend? I'm looking for something that will work with both the 4.0 and 302. I know the 3550 will work, but will it hold up behind a small block? Should I go right up to a 4500, or are there other options I'm missing?
Am I correct in that a pre 96 Dodge NV4500 will bolt right up to a Dana 300? Was the 3550 offered in anything else besides the TJ? |

If your looking for a 5 speed manual id go with the nv-4500, thats what i have and its pretty versitile as to what you can put infront of it, and it can handle alot more power than the 3550, hell thats why i put it in, i tore up my 3550.............

I see 4500's on ebay for $700 and I have a few connections in local junk yards so I'm sure I could do much better. I've seen 3550's going for $800, and I'm pretty sure I couldn't find them in the yard unless it is true that they cam in XJ's Its my guess I could get a 4500 with bellhousing and adapter for the same price as a 3550.

install some cheap chevy components and forget about anything labeled FORD. Or, if your beyond redemption: a combination of 305(351?) np435 from a bronco will work well. you need an adapter to go to the 300 but I assume you plan on buying one anyway. an 85 bronco will have what you need but you should try finding newer one that's injected if you want it to run ocassionally. just my $.02. Good luck

Well, here's a 4500 for $700. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=7992065430
Not sure on mileage or running...... I know the Fords pretty good. I got a stock block 302 running 10's supercharged. I talked to the owner at the junkyard and was quoted $200 for a pair of 60s if I pull them. I don't think he had clue about their value, and I wasn't going to enlighten him. Now I just need to find a 4500 in the same yard. Last edited by BADSBRD; 10-26-2005 at 09:10 AM. |
