Drivetrain Decisions

I am looking to replace my 231 with a Dana 300 in my 94 YJ... Future plans call for either a 302 or 351, once the 4.0 calls it quits. What 5-speed manual tranny would you guys recommend? I'm looking for something that will work with both the 4.0 and 302. I know the 3550 will work, but will it hold up behind a small block? Should I go right up to a 4500, or are there other options I'm missing?

Am I correct in that a pre 96 Dodge NV4500 will bolt right up to a Dana 300? Was the 3550 offered in anything else besides the TJ?

3550 came in post 90's xj's as well.

4500 would be my choice if I had one. No clue if that year bolts to a 300 though.

I would guess that the 90's era XJ's had ax-15's and the 2000 and newer XJ's had 3550...that's when the switch for the TJ's was.

is money an issue? It normally is, but if you are thinking 4500 and can afford it it is really hard to beat a 4500.

I see 4500's on ebay for $700 and I have a few connections in local junk yards so I'm sure I could do much better. I've seen 3550's going for $800, and I'm pretty sure I couldn't find them in the yard unless it is true that they cam in XJ's Its my guess I could get a 4500 with bellhousing and adapter for the same price as a 3550.

FORD? Why put more crap parts under your hood?

install some cheap chevy components and forget about anything labeled FORD.

Or, if your beyond redemption:

a combination of 305(351?) np435 from a bronco will work well. you need an adapter to go to the 300 but I assume you plan on buying one anyway.
an 85 bronco will have what you need but you should try finding newer one that's injected if you want it to run ocassionally.
just my $.02. Good luck

Wow, Let me know when you find a good running 4500 for $700. I have been looking, and no luck for anything under a grand with a lot of miles in it

Well, here's a 4500 for $700. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=7992065430

Not sure on mileage or running......

I know the Fords pretty good. I got a stock block 302 running 10's supercharged.
I talked to the owner at the junkyard and was quoted $200 for a pair of 60s if I pull them. I don't think he had clue about their value, and I wasn't going to enlighten him. Now I just need to find a 4500 in the same yard.

Nice deal on the 4500, saw some for $850 and up, some rebuilt, etc, not bad at all, Shipping ballpark is $200, so within a grand, not really that bad.
