Had the basic MM 8,000 lb electric for a few years, right after they fist came out. It was slow, but never gave me a bit of trouble, even when pulling in deep sand. I liked its line-holding brake, too. It didn't wind-down when you stopped pulling - it would stop, immediately. I'd have no problem buying another, but I'm now interested in their 9,500 lb integrated solenoid model.

Andy, are you looking at the MM hydrolic winches or the Electric ones. The pros and cons differ depending on what we are comparing here.

I have a hydro MM right now which pulls like a mule and has pretty decent line speed when in high range. The only thing that sucks is that you cannot turn your wheels while winching. The steering box gets all the pressure and the winch stops pulling. When you release the steering wheel, the winch begins to pull again. Other than that, its the balls. I had an 8K electric MM which pulled like a mule but as slow as one too. Plus the clutch lever and remote control was very cheap plastic. You get what you pay for. If you are a weekend wheeler that would only use it once and a while, it is a good value. For a regular crawler or mud bogger, go with a tried and true Warn.

Whatever winch that you decide on, I would try to stick with winches that have a Series Wound motor as they should last longer. Stay away from cheaper winches with the permanent magnet motors, unless you are only going to use the winch once or twice a year. Last edited by jesster; 02-21-2006 at 11:17 AM. |

pro-cheap
con-slow, you can easily outdrive the winch, kinking the cable I wheel with two guys who have MM8000s. Both still going strong after ~4years. However, one does smoke a little after hard long pulls, but never has failed him. |

Guess I'll throw my opinion in. I got the PE8000 a couple months ago because I'm a cheapass, and so far I have used it half a dozen times and it has worked flawlessly. Very slow, but it pulls good. 90% of the time I'm using the winch on someone else, so why the hell should I spend $1000 to pull YOUR ASS OUT? I don't do mud, so my winching is usually to get myself or someone else a couple feet when they get hung up on the rocks.
When I finally do my real build, THEN I'll probably get a nice fast Warn.

I'm happy with my MME9000. It is slow but I don't use it a lot. I bought a snatch block from ewinches. This is because I drive full size. Knock on wood: It has got me out of everything I have put it through. MM Customer Service is good as well. I had to call a couple of time regarding a custom install.

Pro Price, Con Inferior motor design (at least on the lower end non hydraulic units).
Series wound motors are going to be by far, the best. fastest and most reliable being the key. |

My 9000 works great but will not make a full line length pull before overheating and stopping. Other then that it works geat with my XJ.

Sounds like you plumbed it wrong it should go from the solenoid to the winch then from the winch to the steering box them return to pump, when not active should only go from pump to solenoid to steering box... |

I have an MM SE12000 on mine. It has a series wound motor, and pulls less amps at an 8000# pull than ANY other 9000# winch.I agree with the previous poster that MM used too much 3/8" cable for the drum size. I swapped mine out for 100" of 5/16" Amsteel rope. Problem solved!
Mine's worked flawlessly every time I've hit the button, and I'm not at all concerned that it's a little slower than other winches.

My 9500 is a little slower than a comparable Warn. And overall it just feels flimsy. A little too much plastic to it for my liking. That said it's never let me down even under long pulls and heavy extractions.
