My stereo got jacked...now my headlights wont work - Pirate4x4.Com : 4x4 and Off-Road Forum

So last night my 88 XJ got broken into and my stereo deck and my case full of dvds got stolen. It sucks but what are you gonna do ya know? Anyways I went to work, came home and went to work on my jeep. Fixed some vacuum lines and then went to take it for a test drive. It was getting dark so i flipped on my headlights and nothing. They will not come on. I tried turning the switch to turn on my interior dome light and still nothing. Gauges are out too.

I checked the fuses and circuit breakers and they are fine. When i open the door with the switch pulled out i dont get the door chime or anything. But with the door open the dome light does come on. Which leads me to believe that the switch is not getting power. My hazards all work, turn signals, cant check my hi-beams cause my hi-beam stick thingy has been broken since i got the truck.

Anyways if there is any information out there please help me out.

I may not be much help, but sounds like he/she had cut something behind your stereo. Either that, or he/she may have yanked a wire loose. Did you check every wire back there to make sure that it is secure? I know there are tons back there, and I wouldn't personally want to do it myself.. Are the fuses getting the correct power? Can you tap into your wires and test to see if everything is getting a charge? I would just follow each wire back and see where it's stopping getting juice.. Hope you figure it out.. I hate when people do that.

As for people jacking your stuff.. What I did, since I am so sick and tired of people breaking windows to my cars (among replacing all your valuables, you have to spend more to get the window replaced).. I just stopped locking my car, bought a good alarm system that has a pretty good range (quarter to half mile) and turn that on. That way, they can go ahead and open my door, but once they get in, my alarm goes off, and I am notified so I can stop it once it starts. I have had 1 person go into my car since I got it, and that's it. They opened the door and ran. So again.. Good luck!

I just went through the same thing with my buddies 96 xj. The dash lights and guages went through the stereo wiring. Not sure about on an older one. Check out a wiring diagram for your rig. Wish I could help more.
