ditto on the 8274-50, fast line speed, classic look, dependable, and easily rebuildable.

If you are going to buy something new, and plan on actually using the winch for it's intended purpose, then save yourself the headache and buy a warn premium right off the bat.

While the 8274-50 is indeed a good winch (which I recommend just like everyone else), it's quite expensive and uses a different mounting system than most other winches out there. It stands up tall, blocks more airflow to the radiator, and is a bit big & bulky. It's major benefits are it's ability to hold a lot of cable, it's super-fast no-load line speed, and it's good brake system.

If you want to save money, you can run an M8. It's rated at 8000 lbs. (same as an 8274), is still relatively fast, and carries the same warranty. They are decent winches and overall work quite well, plus you can get one for half the price of an 8274.

If you're looking to go used (aka looking for a screaming deal...) I know there's 1000 guys out here who will tell you ramsey are great winches, but I personally don't like them. I've seen them work... I've also seen them grenade on the 3rd pull. Same goes for Superwinch. If you want to roll the dice with either of them, that's up to you. I'd avoid anything else (milemarker, t-max, warn's tabor line, etc.) like the plague. Again, if you're spending money on anything new, there's no reason not to buy a warn premium, because you're not saving any money on the deal.

One last thing - I am partial to remote solenoid winches. If anything breaks it's most likely going to be the solenoid, and with it as a separate unit, it's an easy fix. If it's integrated into the winch body (like any of the "i" models of warn winches), it's much more of a process to repair. Also, the integrated solenoid adds bulk to the winch.

Just my $0.02.

Hans

TMax 9K...look in the vendor section here for a better than average price

I have a shitload of pulls on mine and it still runs like it's new...also comes with a trailer plug if you want to run it as a trailer winch also

What kind of wheeling do you do? I went out and got a warn premium 12k and will probably have it for many years. Its slow, but can pull out every fullsize that gets in my way when I want to go home and they are blocking the trails(Happens EVERY DAMN TIME we go out around here).

Edit: Most of my buddys run the classic warn on thier jeeps. Works great around here untill you get a gnarly stuck and they have to extract.

WARN all the way. Lot's of others out there will work well but nothing beats a Warn for line speed! You will never regret it.

like everybody else says "8274-50". That is the best that you will find. I personally run a warn M8000, bought it used for a steal. No complaints! Never let me down but would prefer the speed of the 8274. Whatever you do DON'T buy a Ramsey!

I have a couple of friends that were tring to get out cheap and bought Ramsey, The cables are very hard to pull in free spool no matter how many times that the winch has been used it doesn't get aby easier. The line speed sucks! Now saying that, If you can not afford a Warn then anything will be better than nothing. Do you and the people you ride with a favor and have some type of winch.
