No keys and column is locked

79 CJ. Bought it as a project and don't have the keys.

Anybody know how to get the lock out of the column?

You could pull the wheel and cut the pin but it wouldn't ever work again, but then again its not going to work.

It's been a few years since I did one... IIRC Remove steering wheel, Push down and remove the snap ring remove lockplate (it's spring loaded be careful) and turn signal assembly. Then you can remove the retainer clip that holds the lock cylinder. Replace with new lock cylinder. Reassemble.

Get a Haynes Manual ($15) it should have directions and pictures, etc. Lock cyinder with keys will be approx $15. You may need a steering wheel puller and a lock plate remover, you can usually rent, buy for cheap, all at your favorite local autoparts store.

Didn't think of looking in the Haynes manual. Doesn't sound too bad.

Thanks,

A hammer and a flat head screwdriver will do the trick.

Just did mine when my keys went scuba diving to the bottom of the lake. The manul will say that the cylinder must be in the on position. It doesn't just make sure that the new cylinder is in the same position as the old one when installing it. You should be able to pick up a new cylinder at any parts depot ( autozone) for $11- 13. Not to bad.

Get the Haynes/Chilton manual. I just did this in my 85 CJ, it has the same basic column as my 73 javelin. I didn't have a manual when I did the Javelin and broke a few smaller pieces. The manual shows you a couple little tips that make it a lot easier. pictures help to.
