Cat for '96 cherokee (XJ?)

My DD needs one, anyone have a good source for Kalifornia legal catalytic converters. I'm finding the venders should wear masks when selling them ($300+)

One of the elements is lose, should I try to repair it?

I have the tools, Mig/Tig, Sawzal and BFH....

get an aftermarket cat with the correct screw in O2 sensor bung for the OB2 computer. you can get an aftermarket cat from jegs, summit, ebay, ETC. it will get a little more rumble with the aftermarket cat though

96 should be before OBD2 requirements, correct?

Nope... '96 is the start of ODBII. The dealer appears to be the best choice at $265.

But... being a cheap bastard I'm going to try to fix it. The "biskets" are held in place with a fiber material. I liberated some fiber-fax from work, a high heat resistant packing used in hot presses, good for 1300 degs. If anyones interrested I'll post the results...

my buddie got a recall notice in the mail a week or two ago about the cat. he has a 96 xj so that might be your cheapest bet.

mine has changed owners umpteen billion times, has 220 k on it, and has no factory exaust on it, so its fine. some sort of cheap ebay cat on there, that seems to have blown out or something, 2.5"/ 2.25" piping, and a flowy 40 makes it sound good

I checked with Jeep on this, the recall has to do with a software change to the ECU and a check on the O2 sensor in the Cat. Thanks for the pointer anyway.

I suceeded in repacking the old one, the front biscuit was still in place, the rear had been beat up a little as it bounced around. I removed the heat shield with a chisel (un bent the edge) and cut the CAT open with a 3.0 x 1/16 cutoff wheel in a die grinder. I wrapped both biscuits with the fiber-fax material and TIGed the halfs back together. Re-installed the heat shield and installed the CAT on the XJ. So far all is well.

Should be interresting explaining it to the smog guys, they'll never believe it was to fix it and not disable it, kind of like breaking into jail.
