yj engine swap
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i am interested in having a 6 cylinder swapped into my 90 yj. what is the path of least resistance. i am not overly mechanically inclined but i am not going to be doing it either. i have a donor 4.0 out of an 90 xj but i am not sold on the idea. i have heard everyone talk about a chevy swap but don't know what it entails. |

I opted to replace my 4 banger with the Chevy v-6 vortec. IMHO its a better fit and just as easy as swapping in the straight 6. I went with the v-6, al460e auto tranny, and an Atlas II combination. With that combo I actually ended up lenthening my rear drive shaft, and that's a good thing. Any way you go you're looking at welding new motor mounts, new ECM, new tranny, new radiator and belt driven accesories, and so forth. So why go to all that work to end up with something you could have bought at a used car dealer?

This spring I swapped in a 94 XJ 4.0L into my 95 YJ. There is a bunch of work, but A LOT of this transfered nicely.
Motor mounts have to be cut off and moved Rear DS shortened Front DS lengthened Need all the computer stuff from the 4.0L The radiators are the same, very little mod to the transmission mount is requried if any. However the XJ t-case is clocked lower than the YJ one. It did not really cause any issues in mine. I am thoroughly happy with the swap

The 4 banger DS is longer than the stock 6 cylinder.

Longer DS = Less Severe Angles at the joints = Less Wear = Less potential for breakage (etc, etc.) So why are you "thoroughly happy" with a shorter DS?
