Unhappy CV Driveshaft rebuild Questions???

I have a 2000 TJ and had a CV rear driveshaft and HD output put in when I put on my 3.5" lift. I'm runnin 33" tires, and have a rear air locker.
I've wheeled two Jamborees and RTCC since build up, but otherwise have only put 8,000 miles since lift and install (72K miles total). The shaft started sounding like a WWII plane on the 7 hr. ride back from last Jamboree so I don't think any hard core wheelin' caused any major damage.

Help! Questions:
1) How surprised should I be that my CV drive shaft just needed to be rebuilt after 8K miles?
2) How bummed should I be that it cost me $321 + $100 labor/tax/shipping to rebuild, when the original shaft & output kit cost $525?
3) Should I have just bought another shaft from the manufacturer and used the "old" one in its current state for back up?

I would be bummed. Those are not too bad to rebuild, kit is like 50 bux. All they did was go through the cv?

I've had no problems with my explorer CV rear DS. $60 for the shaft, $90 to get it cut and balanced.

Running it for 2 years? ish

$421 to rebuild?!? Ouch, you got screwed
These things are easy to rebuild as was mentioned, just a bit more involved then a U-joint change.

yeah, the original was a Tom Woods. Now I wonder if the rebuilt one is going to be as good, or better or worse. The shop I took it to had estimated bet. $120 & $320 to rebuild. I'm not surprised the rebuild was at the $320 range, just didn't realize the extra $100 for ancilary stuff. Maybe I should have done my homework first on PBB before I gave the "okay"

Basically live and learn. It was the first time at this particular shop so maybe I didn't ask the right questions. I'll go back to my old shop even though it's an hour away versus 5 min. I can put on a lift and slip in new axles but when it comes to some of this stuff I don't know enough yet and need to rely on the pros to troubleshoot and fix.

WOW! All the parts alone to buy would cost less than 250.00 then maybe 100 to build. You got the shaft. I wouldn't use that shop again. What type of use did they get? Have you greased them since you got the cv shaft?

Properly maintained (greased)I would hope to get 30,000+ miles out of one of Tom's. I've got 25,000 on mine with lots of trail abuse...

WOW --- talk about getting the shaft at the driveline shop....

Does this guy do much offroad business? If so you might warn others about his pricing tactics..

Had that happen with my local shop with a club member,I went and talked with he shop owner/operator, he got real defensive at first saying he didn't overcharge but then offered to "refund" some money.

We finally got some fixed "club" pricing in place, I didn't beat him down on prices, just got him to have standard prices, everytime I went by there to pick up U-joints he quoted a different price... made it hard to pick up stuff for others since I never knew what the price would be.
