YJ 177k miles 4.2 I6 - is this trail worthy?
Is a stock YJ with 177k miles on the stock 4.2 I6 and 5 speed tranny something I should stay away from?
How many miles do these usually run for? What is that worth in decent shape? Looking at getting a YJ.

Depending on what you pay for it will determine whether it's trail worthy or not imo. It will go offroad and will perform well up to a point, making it worth it by the money you pay for it and how much you are expecting / whether you're going to build it up is up to you.

The crappy carb problem is pretty cheap and easy to fix, if you dont have to worry about passing emissions. Furthermore, there are a couple easy swaps for transmissions.
Like people have said, you'll probably end up swapping out everything anyways, buy it.

Opinions vary
My '89 Yj has over 220K on the original 258 w/ no major problems.
The carb has to be adjusted every now and then (no news there) and I have replaced the ICM once. W/ a mpi upgrade & 4.0 head w/ some headers, a spacer, and upgraded filter, it would last even longer.........though that would cost the same as the LS1 swap I am about to do. The tranny has been replaced & the rear axle rebuilt once. Also, about to swap in an NV4500, 60, 14, & atlas.....buuuuuttttt, the stock components are fine for light duty (read: no wheeling beyond street queen & fire roads) unless you want to find your rig's weakness in the middle of a trail with no bypass & rigs stacking up faster than wood chips in Bob Villa's workshop.

I keep waiting
I beat the hell out of it & it it just comes back for more.
Still pures along at 80 on the highway w/ no problems. Engine or otherwise. Oh well, at least I can sell the replaced parts for a bit more since they aren't broken........... |
