Quadra Trac vs Selec Trac

I've heard that Selec Trac is not very strong and not recommended for off roading. Can someone direct me to some information on this issue?

Let me add this. I'm looking at 91 and newer Cherokees, just want to know which 4wd system is best.

both are full time 4WD and prone to the viscus coupler o nthe xfer failing...I would look for a XJ with a NP231

2WD, 4HI, N, 4LO

if your talking about just XJ cherokees and not grands then:
they never put the 249 quadra track in the XJ

The select trac 242 does not have a VC and yes as rated by NV is the weaker of the 2 that were available in the XJ
the command trac is the 231 that was in the XJ cherokee and is stronger than the 242.

Exactly, although the 242 is considered "slightly" weaker--the more annoying issue is the lack of aftermarket support (SYE options, low range conversions and the like). For a DD in snow country, though, the full time option is great. For a hardcore rig, I would go 231, for a DD, the 242 (JMHO) after having lived with the 242 for a few years now.

Great info, guys. Much appreciated. I wish Pirate had a search function. I've read now here and on another website that they are both pretty good Xfer cases in the Command-Trac (231) and Selec-Trac (242). Do Post 91 Cherokees have any other major issues to avoid when picking one to buy, ie manual or automatic trans, hubs, etc.?

Pirate does have a search function if you pay the $20 a year to get a Red Star

there a different spline counts coming out of your transmission, IIRC all 242's are splined for mating with an automatic, but 231's have either 21 or 23 splines depending on transmission. it is not difficult to swap the input shaft but much easier to buy one with the correct spline length and count.

the 242 suck balls, mine didnt last a week before i went to a 231

I haven't any complaints regarding the daily function of my 242. I much prefer it to the 241 that is in my father's truck. But as stated above if you really want to get deep into offroad the 231 is a better choice. Partially because there is SYE kits galore, partly is because there is a heavy duty rebuild kit, 4:1 crawl ratio and 2-Low kit.

The 242 does have a SYE kit, but it isn't heavy duty. You can get a 4:1 kit, but you have to send your case away for it to get modified for the kit. No heavy duty parts or 2-low.

Having said that I am not a hardcore rock crawler, my XJ is still my daily transportation in ints 10th year. So I prefer the case to be friendlier where it matters more to me.
