Best tranny swap for an XJ
Whats the best tranny to swap into a 1997 Jeep Cherokee XJ with the factory 4.0L? I dont want to have to chop up my unibody, but I am tired of getting my tranny rebuilt.

I've got the factory 5speed manual, but it has started slipping pretty bad.

uhhhh you are tired of gettign the tranny rebuilt? Has it been rebuilt mor ethan once already?
the 5spdd you have aiss an AX15 - IF you can find one I would look for a NV3550 (2000+ Wrangler 5speed) it will bolt right up to your xfer case as well... If not look for another AX-15 |

The AX-15 is a good transmission. If it's slipping, it needs a clutch, not a transmission. Put a new clutch in, have the flywheel re-surfaced, and put in a re-manufactured pressure plate.
Edit- If you're wasting clutches because you're slipping it to make up for big tires and stock gears, you need to re-gear.

I've got the crappy little peugeot 5 speed spinning my 33" tires, but since my diffs have 4.88's the tranny is still going strong, even with 250,000 miles on it (but admittedly, only the last 25,000 were with 33's) +
