distributor issues

Ok just a little background information, I'm running a CJ 258 block with a 4.0 HO head on it and 4.0 fuel injection.

My distributor recently started making really weird noises, I almost thought it was the front belt drive at first but you can definitely hear it coming from the dist. area, plus I can feel the sound if I touch the dist.

It almost sounds like a rubbing sound, but I've pulled the cap and couldn't see any issues inside, so I'm a little lost at the moment.

I was told by someone that it could be a potential shaft failure on the dist. Any other ideas? Anything I should look for?

Thanks!

-Doug

When I pull it should there be noticeable wear? What should I look for exactly?

the edges of the gear teeth should look squared, not feathered or tapered.
