lifter question

89 xj 4.0

I have my valve cover off and was replacing the leaky gasket. While I was in there I was looking at the rocker arms and such and noticed that some of the push rods are harder to move up and down than others.I was thinking that fully primed good lifter would have enough pressure built up that you wouldn't be able to move the push rod down into the lifter??

Btw I did this with the pistons at tdc so both valves are closed...why would there be a difference in firmness bettween the two push rods?Do I have bad lifters that are bleeding off pressure or what?Am I being paranoid? Will they firm up when I start the motor?

aside from removing them to do an inspection how else can I test them??
Any input will be appreciated....

i don't have the answer but if you don't have noisy lifters then probably no need to worry about it right? i had noisy lifters in my old 4.2 and changed out all the lifters, was quiet then.

I do in fact have lifter noise....is it normal for hydro lifter to bleed off pressure overnight or after a few days?Would a leak down test confirm spongy collasped lifters?

I have never tested lifters. When they start to have issues, I just replace them (all of them).

no... lifters do not hold pressure... they can infact be compressed by hand... a collapsed lifter is a lifter that won't return when compressed.. if you have noise adjust the lash... if that doesn't fix it replace them.... get a chilton manual
