which next?

I'm a relatively new comer...and my jeep is new to me, still feeling it out.

Here's what I have:

1980 CJ7, mildly built 304, auto tranny, dana 300, locked front and rear, cromo axles, SPOA, tj springs, running 35's.

Here's what I've experience:

When crawling, in four low, steering is sometimes IMPOSSIBLE, completely. I also do a lot of local exploring alone, and a self recovery tool is also needed.

I really feel the next things I need are a winch and some help in the steering department. I have a new steering box mount on order (not here yet, so I can't qualify the help it will give). The steering box I have now is stock, the other stuff is beefy...the steering box is sloppy as can be too, and leaks a tad.

So, my question is, winch or steering next? I'm leaning towards steering (hydraulic assist), but would like some advice since I'm not sure how much a new steering box will really help.

Sounds like you need some steering help. 35s really aren't that big for the stock box. I'd try another box/pump before going for an assist set up but if ya're going that way, might as well get the box set up for it. Ya can add the cylinder latter and get the winch for when you're out alone.

Replace steering box first (no need for assist yet) and see if that solves most of the problems. I'd go for the winch before assist. Wheeling alone in difficult terrain isn't recommended, but if you do then you need complete recovery gear.

Steering 35s shouldn't be that difficult. Sounds like there is an issue to be diagnosed and repaired before upgrading (unless you want to play parts darts).
How is the front locked? A full locker will increase steering effort. A spool or welded will make steering damn near impossible sometimes- I tried a spool in the front once. Just once.
Otherwise, I'd look for a mechanical issue, not just a common weak area.

That's what I'm thinking. Unlock one side and see if it makes a difference.
