Hello
Did some searches here...wanted to see if anyone is running 3" Backspacing.
Just got an LJ Rubicon. Currently have a set of 35"x12.5"-15 BFG AT with 15x8 wheels and 4" Backspacing. Have another set of 15x5 with 3" Backspacing that i would like t use.
At 3" Backspacing will it be too much wear on wheel bearings and steering box? I am not if that 1" will create much more wear than current situation.
I'm running 2.5" backspacing. I haven't had these wheels and tires long (37 Irok radials), but the guy I bought 'em from DD 'em (my axles, tires and wheels) for a year and then wheeled the snot out of 'em. I did have to replace the ball joints, and bearings but I don't know how many miles were on them.
Looks like my math was off, but the concept is still the same. Don't remember what my train of thought was either
So no matter what the size of the wheel width is the tire should center at half the distance, so at 8" wheel width the tire should center at 4", and a 5" wheel width would center the tire at 2.5".
On the 8" wide tire, the wheel is centered at 4" witch is the same as the backspacing so the tire is centered right over the axle.
On a wheel with 5" width, the tire centers at 2.5". If the backspacing is 3" then it would center your tire about 1/2" inside the axle, which is closer then what you have today.
Basically, 4" of backspacing is the center of the 8" rim. 3" of backspacing on a 5" rim puts the backspacing closer to the outside of the rim where you usually want the backspacing to be closer to the inside of the rim to prevent rubbing.
I'm done in here, if you're running a 15x8 then you should have no problems with 3" of backspacing. Lots of people run that. If you're running a 15x5 like you said in the original post I would expect to see some rubbing.
I guess at 3" I should be ok altough various Jeepers swear by 3.75" as a limit to protect bearing and steering components....
Anyways the wheels are there I will just swap them once the Stauns arrive.
you should be fine with 3'' people run 15x10's with 3.5''
