Thumbs down Am I On Crazy Pills???

This is a comment about a Dana 30 axle on a different board...

I blew a u - joint once and it didnt take out my axle shafts..........................I took out my spider gears instead ;-) LOL

Why not pull the inner axle shaft and trashed u-joint and just leave the stub shaft and hub togather and drive it home?

not sure which part of that quote is your statement and which is from the other board.

at any rate, you must leave the outer shaft in in you are running unit bearings or you risk having the hub break up on the highway.

Since I hate unit bearings just on principal, does anyone make a kit to replace them with regular bearings? I used a dynatrac kit for my superduty, do they have a kit worth a damn for the jeeps, or is someone else make a better one? Sorry for the slight hijack..

You'll lose a lot of oil and possibly damage more shit.

dont spend $1000 on a dana 30. If you do you deserve to be shot. You can buy a dana 44 from a dodge dealer for like $2000 now. At least then you will have a axle worth something. IM not saying dana 30s dont have their place, but its not on the lets spend a $1000 to make it better list.

yeah... ^^^^ I didn't realize the kits were that much for a conversion, when I did my Superduty I ended up paying less than that... It's my DD so I can't justify the price of a conversion or an axle just because--- better wait til I get the bill for the unit bearings and everything else when it takes a crap.

Depends on if it is the older ones or the new JK 44s. If it is a JK 44, I would say it is notably better all in all. However, the parts support is still just getting on it's feet as far as gears, lockers, etc. I also hear the axle tubes are made out of some kind of cast, so could use reinforcing more so than other dana tubes. I read somewhere that dana wanted to call it a Dana47 due to it's beefiness, but Jeep wanted it to remain 44 for the sake of name recognition.

if you pull both inner shafts the differential will not turn...you can drain the oil and you can't really damage anything in there driving on the road.
