lifter?
I have a 92 Jeep wrangler. I know that straight six's are notorious for loud lifters when they start up. Mine has always done that when it hasn't been run for a while. But today I noticed that every time I put it in drive it sounds like a lifter is getting loud. If I put it in natural and rev it the sound seems to go away. Has anyone else had this problem and if so any recommendations on fixing it would be appreciated?

well, i would make sure somthing else isnt making noise, such as a belt driven accessory or pulley. if you come back to the lifter you can try a 1/2 qt of mopar atf +4 in the oil and run it for a few days. the detergents in the atf may clear a restricted passage in or to the lifter. if that doesnt work, gear up for a day project.
good luck

get a long screwdriver, put it against your ear, and hold it on the engine in different places. this should pinpoint where your problem is.

The 140k mile 4.0 in my YJ had a lifter tap for years. After trying atf, Marvel Mystery oil, STP, and a bunch of other things, I decided to live with it.
I recently swapped to a Purolator plus filter and the tap is gone. I'm not saying it will work for you, just that is how I got rid of my 4.0 tap. |
