16.5 Military tires?
I see some guys selling slightly used GOODYEAR WRANGLER MILITARY OZ RADIAL TIRES. Are these worth a damn? I'm looking for a good all around tire good on the trails/ decent on the road. Like others I drive my rig to the trails. Don't want something that is going to melt away while being driven on the road. Currently have 15" wheels so would go to 16.5" steel wheel. Is the 16.5 diameter wheel worth converting to to for this good tire deal?

if you need a good set of street tires, go for it. i ran them as a DD only tire for prob 9 months and was very happy with them. for reference, they had prob 50%+ tread when i sold them, on wheels, and sold the set up for 225$. good tires for cheap and they seemed to wear pretty well. i never balanced them and had them above "safe" highway speeds a time or two with no issues.

They are a good tire, and wear good. They are a load range of D or E so they are for heavy vehicles(hummer)and will wear good on a light jeep.....The only thing is that the 16.5 rims are 8 lug and you will either have to re-center the steel wheels or go with 8 lug axles. The bonus is that the hummer rim is a double bead lock!!!

The only down side of the deal is that they are heavy as shit and the backspacing is like -7, I think.

ive ran nothing but hummer tires on my dd and it is a cummings, didnt wear hardly at, had them on there about 10-11 months before i swapped them to a newer set of hummer tires, they make a real good street tire. I just run them on black 16.5 steelies, and i can get 5 h1s and tires from a guy in OK for $200 and have about 90-95% tread left on them

16.5 black and chrome steelies in 6 and 5 lug are easy to come by. I sell those tires so I have to source wheels for customers alot.
The only thing I have trouble finding cheap 16.5" steelies in is Ford metric 8 lug. Just the Mickey Thompson Alloys.

the tires are good but for just normal driving around but I wouldnt air down a 16.5 for offroading. they tend to have a very weak sidewall and tire bead. Ive seen many pop beads on the trail or tear sidwalls. other than that yea you can get rims in 5 or 6 lug pretty easy and would be a good pick up if your trying not to wear down some other tires!

there is a set of 5 of new military bfg baja ta's (37x12.5r16.5) on ebay were $1450 "buy now" price already mounted on the hmmwv wheels. Don't know how these ended up on ebay since military has had these tires for less then a year.

Military tires
Okay, I really appreciate the feedback from everyone. I have only been apart of Pirate for the past 6 months and I love it.
I'm needing 4-5 37"/ 12.5- 16.5 Goodyear wrangler MT military tires. IF you can beat the price of the post on ebay i'm interested. Thanks guys.

I've ran surplus MT's on my H1, they're a good trail tire but the MTR is better then the old MT's.
Hard rubber, decent wear, but I had to toss my old 16.5" MT's because of dry rot. I'd consider the 37" MT's from hmmwv's if they were only made in the last 3-4 years. I found a set, new, DOT stamped date from fall of 07 for $750, but that was a fluke, the tires are usually back ordered and will go for 200-500$ each new. I got the set cheap after running into a tires/rim guy who saw my H1 and had them in stock. He special ordered them for another H1 customer but after a few months of waiting he cancelled his order and got different tires. I got a deal just to get them out of the shop. The HMMWV tires should have a week/year stamp on it, eg 3407 , 34th week of the 2007. I wouldn't touch tires made more then a few years ago, they'll fall apart on you or crack/wear. BF Goodrich picked up the HMMWV contract, so they have a Baja M/T specially designed for the H1 16.5" rims. They're pricey but a very nice design that the military is switching to for the current wars. kascar.com sells them. I think we, the taxpayer, spends 300$ per tire for the military, kascar resells them to the public for around 500$ each ![]() Because of the BF Goodrich contract, many recently made MT tires are hitting the surplus block. There was a ebay seller in Arizona who was selling 2-4 year old sets of barely used tires for 400$ including shipping [In reality he was selling the sets for 20-50$ and the rest was shipping included into the price just to get the sets to sell]. Most of the rims/tires/wheels you see for sale were brought pennys on the dollar from the government liquidations auction site

Search the Vendors section...
I think the sellers name is 406YJ or something, he sells recentered H1 beadlocks, and often has the tires for sale too. Good prices, good tread, good seller. -Chris |

I had the 36" H-1's on my Jeep fpr ~2yrs, recentered the H-1 Rim, cut down the runflat portion of the beadlock. Even though the tires were bias ply they road pretty good, balanced them with airsoft BB's. Aired down and grooved tehy impressed alot of people in the rocks. Spin them once or twice and the rubber heated up and they just flat out stuck to the rocks. For the price i wouldn't hesitate to run them on a driver/wheeler. I only took them off due to neeeding a bigger tire. If they made the RTII's in a 38 I would run them in a minute.

X2 on the vendors area.
One of the vendors was selling the tires and recentered beadlocks for a single price of about 135 a corner. Thats rim and tire. And you get your bolt pattern. Tis worth looking into.
