Aussie break-in
I put an Aussie in the D44 rear of my '86 CJ-7. Ran it ~100 to 150 miles, then decided to take the cover off, and check everything out. The locker's parts look exactly like they did the day I put them in, minus the red grease. The only problem I noticed was some talcum-powder fine metal pieces like glitter in the oil that came out.
Is this part of break-in and normal wear or is something wrong with my install? Tolerances measured at install were within range, but were very tight. |

after 100-150 miles of turning left and turning right, ratcheting and unratcheting, there is bound to be some metal in there. you would have broken some teeth by now if it wasnt in there just right. i think you are fine.

You are fine. Put the cover back on, top it off and run it.

Put a large flat magnet in the bottom of your diff. you are ALWAYS going to have metalic particals in the Diff oil.

I guess break-in was the wrong way to phrase it. Its a long way to the trails from where I live so I either take the Jeep to the dog park and such or it sits parked. It did get tested immediately at the new subdivision going in next door. Its my first locker so I was obviously pleased
