steering box bracket is F#$$ed.....
I just noticed that my braket for the steering box is broken and the steering box moves all over the place....i have searched and found the heavy duty brace that i just bought, but i havent found any good pictures of it installed....im kinda needing some pics so i know what im getting my self into....It looked like the stock brace also holds on the front shackle mount??? If so is that a real pita to get off of there????
Help appreciated.... Thanks! Last edited by mike4089; 06-30-2009 at 02:43 PM. |

Can you post some pictures so the rest of us can understand WTF you are talking about?
I, for one, don't even know what jeep you are talking about. It does help!

I guess your talking about the bracket that holds the steering box to the frame? You sure the bracket is broken? It's usually the 'ears' on the steering box.
Not that tough to get it apart ...... but take a very close look at the frame to be VERY SURE IT"S NOT BROKEN/CRACKED also. From memory (not that good) your box is bolted on the bracket with 3 bolts? The new heavy duty bracket will be set up for 4 bolts (much stronger). There might be a shared bolt for the bracket & the spring hanger? Your the one looking at it, so you can tell us. Again from memory, there will be bolts through the frame horizonally and vertically holding the bracket. Replace all the bolts if new ones don't come with your new bracket. If nothing else is broken, it's a job that can be done in a day (beer included). If you wheeling your rig in some tough stuff, might consider adding a cross frame steering box bracket. Good luck

It shouldn't be that hard to get off, soak all the bolts first. Also yes the steering box bracket also shares a hole with the shackle hanger but it's not a big deal.
Also if you have bigger tires than stock get the steering cross brace, You will need it. |

Also, when your putting it on, bolt the steering box to it first, then put it on the frame. Also make sure o put the steering shaft back on the box before getting it all the way up there. It sucks, but not as much as when you have to take it off two or three times. I would also agree on getting the cross frame brace as well.

If your frame is cracked (woe is you) a lot more work will be required. If it's just a single line crack ..... maybe able to just weld up the crack. If it's more than that ............ maybe just weld in a plate but may have to cut out a section. Have to see it to say more.
