The bearings are toast, but could make good setup bearings for next time. ..The carrier may be toast too, and probably is. If you replace the bearings and the cones still spin, it's shot. I had this happen on some inner wheel bearings the other day, so I pitted the shit out of the hub and tried again. That didn't help enough, so I actually used some JB Weld... I figure it couldn't hurt to try, since I'd have to replace the stuff anyway.

Caterpillar High strength retaining compound. Follow the instructions to the letter. Also you can ding the mounting area around with a center punch.
You would still want to use the retaining compond. And you will need new bearings. Your best bet is a new carrier.

You said that as though it's common knowledge, haha. I figured I wasn't the first, but I still assumed it would be trumped up to good ol' redneck reengineering.

I use to work at a Caterpillar dealer for years. Some of the owners of mobile junk collectors are cheap! Caterpillars never die but sometimes replacement parts run out!
