68 jeepster commando build.

i have been working on this for a while now, and thought i should start a build thread. i hope you enjoy.
i picked up this 68 as a one family owner ,life time nevada jeepster with 68,000 orig. miles on the clock. it is RUST FREE and i mean rust free as in none, zilch, zero, nada.with only one small dent in the hood and one on the front fender. i was born and raised in the desert, and i hate fixing rust .so i looked hard for a good solid build platform to start. and i dont think i could have found a better one. i have owned/built 2 cj7's,waggys,xjs,a flatty, and a 67 halfcab commando in the past .so i have a real good idea of what i want.
THE PLAN!!!
i am building this as a very capable trail/hunting rig.NOT a trailer queen or rock basher.just something that i can pack up some camping/hunting gear ,run down the interstate for a couple hundred miles, get way back in the wilderness without breaking parts and drive home safely. i live with in an hour drive of the rubicon, fordcye, moonrocks, prison hills, ect. and a few million miles of blm land .so i want an all around trail truck.
THE PARTS LIST.
buick 231 evenfire. hei,headers,four barrel,
sm420
dana 20 twin sticked with an AA 32 spline output shaft
rear ford dana 60 semi floater with moser shafts TSM caddy discs, detroit locker and 4:56 gears
front dodge dana 44 narrowed 4.5 in. high steer arms, trutrac
35 inch km2's on black steel wheels.
rubicon express reverse eye anti wrap yj springs dearced 3 inches. so there flatter.
saginaw power steering mounted high between the frame rails
four wheel power disc brakes with braided lines
rebuilt tilt column, wired for a gm plug.
ez wire harness with new switches and gauges.
full cage through the dash.
other dodads like ham radio,on board air, welder, gps, ect.

the only thing i have not done my self was setting up the gears. i'm a flooring/carpet(see username) contractor by trade, NOT a fab guy,or mechanic. so i know its a little rough around the edges, but so far i'm pretty pleased with what i have done.
here are some pics of it when i dragged it home.
i will try and update as often as i can and post lots of pics. thanks mike.

a little update.
i plated the bottom of the rockers.(welding thin gauge metal upside down for 3 hours is not fun)
i finished boxing in the rear spring hanger perch thingys
cut up the dash and plated it so i can fit all the new gauges and switches.
i cut out the speaker grill and made a metal box for the fuse box and all the relays and such. i will make a door for it soon.
i had to cut up the heater box a little and build a plate to go around the lower leg of the rollcage.
i got the motor all buttoned up installed the hydro slave cyl. from novak. and dropped the motor trans and tc in in one unit.
installed the cross member(i will build a skid plate for the tc,trans, ect. after i have the exhaust and front drive line in).

Nice, you should run the dog dish hubcaps still, or sell them to me

heres a little update. i had derek trent's guys at trentfab build me a tank skid to protect the 23 gallon areo tank. i coated the tank and inside of the skid with several coats of duplicover sprayon truckbed paint and wired up the vdo sending unit that came with my speedo.(no not that kind of speedo, ya sicko).and mounted it to the frame.
i also installed new greasable shackles and finished all the under coating and paint under the jeep.
i got the motor/tranny/tc all put together and mounted using the crossmember i built for my other jeepster i had. i used a novak hydro clutch slave cly. and a mc for a yj 4cyl. because it has the same diameter piston for a perfect 1 to1 .
i started to install all the brakelines and found out that 2 are to short and 2 were to long. so i had them redone but i have not mounted them yet.
i am getting very close to finishing this ,but have to hold of on working on it for a while. i had some much needed surgery on my right knee. and am getting to know my couch very well. so it should be a week or so before i can get back at it. so i will update again latter.

and heres a few of how the steering turned(no pun intended) out. i used a mix of flaming river and borgeson parts to join the modified cj5 tilt column to the 4 bolt saginaw box.

i got some more done on the jeepster. built a duel battery tray for the battery's and ran all the cables.i used some angle and expanded steel for the tray.i had to notch the fender and plate it i will post up some pics when i'm done.i made the cables from #2 welding cable .i ran the cables threw the fire wall to a kill switch on the dash.and mounted the welder in the glove box.i'm getting closer to starting this thing. i hope to hear in run in a couple weeks. i got all the power steering lines, brake lines, and clutch line installed and buttoned up. i also swapped in a new high flow power steering pump from agr.and a new high flow water pump for a turbo grand national.i FINLEY got the fuel injection from affordable fuel injection. so that will go in after i run the wiring harness. i'm hoping to start that tomorrow.

Looking good, nice clean work. I like that rear upper shock mount, going to have to do something like that on mine.

Looks good.
I'm running the same axles. The Dodge housing works well with the front springs
Your pictures are an incentive to redo the cage on my 69
