How do you convert Mechanical speedo to Electronic (YJ)?

I currently have a 1990 YJ with the howell TBI system. I need the pulse from the transfer case in order for my jeep to run. I would like to get either a super short SYE or a NVG241OR (rubicon Transfer case) for my YJ. I currently have a mechanical (cable driven) speed reading system and I would have to convert to an electronic VSS. What do I need to do that? Electronic VSS, new gage, and a "signal converter"?

Mine ran fine with the spedometer cable not hooked up.
Probably not the best idea, but I'd like to bet that you could
get the signal from the ECM. If you run win aldl you get a digital readout of the speed. Or you could probably piggyback another sender in the mechanical line.

howell sells the part on their website under tbi parts iirc. it splices into your mechanical cable and sends an electrical signal to the computer.

here's the link, http://howellefi.com/customer/produc...cat=274&page=2although you better check with them to make sure it works on the jeep tbi since i found it in the gm tbi section.

I know, I know. If they were just a couple hundred bucks cheaper...

That part from howell is what is connected from my cable on one end and speedo on the other. Maybe I just splice the wires from the electric VSS into the male end of that connector and into an electric Speedometer?

ohh, i just reread your 1st post more carefully. i thought your were trying to get the pcm to read the signal to run correctly.

i just did a quick google search for autometer elec speedo's and found this good info:

http://www.autometer.com/productPDF/1223.pdf

looks like you can just wire it in to your 2-wire setup if the sender meets the electrical requirements.

I worked with http://www.cmacable.com through the entire process of modifying my ATV and many other vehicles. They have A+ customer service and an excellent line of cable and restraints. If you are looking for Mechanical Cables cma is the way to go!

you'll have to double check this, but I believe that the '91 YJ's had both mechanical and electronic outputs on the T-case. If you use a sender from a 91, you could retain your mechanical sepdo, and also have the electronic signal.

EDIT: Here's a pic of the part that I'm talking about, it's on a 1991 YJ (91 was the only year that had both mechanical and electronic connections on the T-case).
