my steering box started leaking fluid faster than I can put it in. Which one is the best upgrade? what fits back in stock location?

Another stock steering box from the junkyard. You don't need a PSC box (they are great products) if its just used alone, you really aren't getting much benefits. If your steering is totally tricked out with hydro assist, all the measurements are right, you aren't running that stock garbage that came stock in terms of linkages then by all means, PSC is the shizz. If its just a daily driver, or light trail rig.

Mine was the same way for over 5 years(
)...I beat on it for about another 1.5 yrs after that till it wouldnt hold fluid AT ALL, not a drop...It would pour on your feet while you were topping it off( and the resevior was all brown inside from dirt getting into the box through the seal). It wouldnt pass inspection in TX...I went with an Entire PSC steering setup(hydro Assist) since Im still on the street occasionally..I cant remember what a stock box cost( like $400 or so?) I figured Id put that money towards the PSC stuff, and I think it was worth it..But like I said I didnt have the thing working for nearly 6.5 yrs...

Durango box, 98-99. I put one on my 05. 03 and up you have to modify one bolt hole and use a pressure hose from an early TJ, but you should be able to bolt in, drill out a nylon pin in steering shaft and go.
Drilling out the pin may not apply on the early TJs. Last edited by pachary; 02-11-2010 at 01:48 AM. |

The older cherokees and especially j truck boxes will bolt in. I have one from a j20 and dont think I had to modify anything. Of course it was on there for 6 months and started leaking again. not bad but it seaps.
DO NOT buy a reman from the big box stores, I had 2 of them and at dang near 300.00 each they are a ripoff. You know West Texas Offroad used to rebuild these pumps for about half of a reman unit. That will likely be my next step. I agree PSC rocks but if you are lile me, I only run 34's and dont really have any money so junkyard replacements are alright by me.

FWIW, I run a PSC box, stock pump through a cooler and turn my locked 33's with ease. I had to replace my box a while back and figured eff it, I'll go PSC and see how the stock pump works. year and a half later stock pump still works fine. Couldn't be happier...
