Help with 258 starting

Let me first give some background on what I've done. I have a 84 CJ7 (first jeep) that I just picked up. After bringing it home and inspecting things the wiring was butchered so being an aircraft electrician I bought a painless wiring kit. I'm not the best mechanic but you have to start somewhere and I'm trying to do everything myself. While installing the kit I took the computer out of the system and installed a Weber carb and a HEI ignition. Got everything hooked up and now can't get the damn thing to run. I set the engine back to 0 degree timing at TDC then advanced the distributor a bit to get it started so I can adjust from there but all it does is crank and sputter at me. I think that it may have to do with vaccum as it really didn't have any hooked up when i bought it, but really didn't think a vaccum line would keep it from starting. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'd question if something else was wrong, did it run when you got it? an 84 shouldn't have a "computer"

It was running when I got, not at optimum performance and engine does need a rebuild but it was running. 83 - 86 had a computer controlled carb which is the reason I had to change the carb when I did away with the computer.

double check the firing order isn't messed up. if it's an hei it's pretty simple one wire (two if it has a tach) so give it a once over that sounds like it could be the problemo.

Checked the firing order and everything checks good. Replaced the spark plugs because they were in bad shape, but still no go. If anyone has done this setup is there anything that needs to be plugged that maybe I over looked? I would think it is a pretty straight forward setup

I had the same issue on my 86 after the HEI went in. Take it out and rotate it 180 degrees. I'd bet it'll fire up now.

I'll try it and see what happens. If that is the problem I might have to kick my own ass

my brother got a scrambler and it wouldn't start so we pulled it around the block with my tj and she fired right up. so get a friend and drag it down the street and see what happens.

are you sure you got the distributor back in correctly?

Sorry for being delayed on the results mapman. Got the pig fired up. Turned out I'm a dumbass and had the firing order wrong. The only problem I have now is the electric choke doesn't work due to the HEI change over. Painless has the power for the choke getting picked up from the coil and with the HEI in there it doesn't get the power. Starts fine now but we'll see what happens this winter. Thanks for the help guys. I'm a newbie at all this and this site is a HUGE help!
