Front Axle Help
Hey, I've got a 88 cherokee with the stock d30 front axle. It's got the vacuum powered 4wd engagement system. Can I eliminate that by swapping out the 2 piece shaft with a solid shaft from a TJ? Or does anyone know where I can buy a solid axle shaft? Thanks

Yes you can, you will need the inner axle seal for it and I would go ahead and get the drivers side also so that you will get the larger 297 ujoints at the same time, I do not know the part numbers for the seal as I never bothered to upgrade a D-30

Non disconnect shafts came in newer XJs, just like the TJ shaft he's looking at.

yup, that is correct, they also came with the larger 297 ujoint so he should nab both axle shafts as the 88 came with a smaller ujoint

Don't bother with a block off kit, get a SealsIt seal and be done with it. That's what I did and it only requires you to pull the carrier and slip in the seal with some silicone - no pressing in a seal and finding which one goes in your specific housing. Trust me, I tried 5 different seals and SealsIt was the only one that actually fit and seals twice.

Use any 1 piece axle shaft for a D30 from a TJ, XJ, etc. A few guys have made the vacuum system into a posi lock, you may want to look at that too. The SealsIt seal allows you to use any 1 piece shaft and is better than any "kit". I used a kit and other seals first and they were horrible, then got a SealsIt and couldn't be happier. Check out my "grandmas boy" build by searching under my user name, I went into some detail about all this in that build.
