Trying to swap an engine in a 2000 Grand Cherokee

Hey guys I'm new to the forum, my good friend has a 2000 grand Cherokee with the 4.0 and he threw a rod. I'm a mechanic so he came to me and I want to do it right for him. I was going to rebuild the engine for him but its got 188k on it so its really not worth it. Ive found a lot of 91 and 92 4.0s but Ive heard they're not as good as his 2000 and the junk yard says only 99 and 2000 interchange. Is that true? I was under the impression all 4.0s are the same just the intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds and maybe oil pans have to be swapped. Can someone help me out here I really want to find him an engine at a good price so I can get him back on the road.

I would take the word of the yard selling you the engine.

From the research I was able to do today I found out the difference between 99 and 2000 is it doesn't use a distributor and it has a different fuel injection set up. Now my question is can I just bolt the parts off of my dead engine onto the new older engine. The reason I ask is a 2000 4.0 is 1500 and up and a 91-99 4.0 is 450-800. So if its just a matter of swapping exterior parts I'm all for it. When I asked the junkyard that they said they didnt know.
