88 jeep powertrain opinions

so i have an 88 yj with a 258 and a ba/10 and a np231. so i wana change the motor and trans. im thinking of buying a 4.0 and using my 4.2 internals to stroke it out. also wana change the trans and mayb go with a 4 speed with a low first gear like 6.0 or so like the np435 or t18. the np435 is smaller with a lower first gear. anyway let me know what you guys think from past experiences and builds i wana do this right and do it once not a few times over and over. as for the axles i might get an 8.8 for free and swap that when the rear axle gives out.

I like the granny trannys. The np 435 is a good solid trans, if you dont mind the slow shifting. Also if you stay with the drivers side front diff, the np435s are plentiful with bw 1345 transfer cases. By doing that swap your rear driveline would actually have some length, and i think you would have a rear yolk, so no need for an S.Y.E kit.

Yup, what he said. It'd be easy to do with Ford stuff. I already had a complete pass drop axle with high steer and locker sitting in storage and I lucked into a CJ t-18 so that's what's in mine. Use the 4.0, get yourself an AMC bell, flywheel, and clutch and hang a Ford 435 on there and be done.
