I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with a 4.7 V8, auto, and the 247J full time 4wd tcase. I have had it for a while and done a few mods including a Rough Country 4" X kit, Tom Woods front drive shaft, got rid of all the rizeppas, a set of 2010 Rubi wheels and tires, and a few performance mods. I bought it with the intentions of having a trail rig that the whole family could go in plus a third car to use for whatever. It has been great so far but we went out a while back and got rained on, in the mud the jeep fell on its face... It started slipping a little and eventually I lost everything and it wouldn't move. Got it winched on the trailer and got it home and it backed off the trailer fine and drove on the street fine??? All I can figure is the full time (AWD) tcase was week on the front drive and when it starting sending power to the front when the back was slipping in the mud, the the problem became catistrofic. I have since removed the tcase and the chain seams tight but I really dont know much about it. I havent had any luck looking around the wrecking yards for another 247J, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas for me. Would any other case be a direct replacement? I have access to several ZJs which I think most are 242s, I wonder if one of those would work??? Thanks in advance guys. All help will be appreciated.
If you lost everything you should be looking at the trans but since you have the t case out put it back together. There's not much in the t case that going to make you intermittently loose everything. If you had no chain you would still have rwd, if the progressive coupler was bad you should still have rwd.
Drop the trans pan and see if the filter fell out of the pump.
Yes, tried 4lo and it didnt matter. Like I said it was transferring power to the front because the rear was slipping in the mud and that is when I got the popping/slipping. So I guess I really never had front drive it was always running rear.
Oh you didn't say you had a popping. Have you checked the CV joints at the axle, or if you have a CV style front driveshaft? Those are the next bet
