How much does it cost a shop to swap in a 4.0 motor??? i would like to try and do it, but don't have access to all the things i would need for the swap. I currently have a 4 banger. at the very least, i could get a shop to install the engine and tyranny, and ill do the wiring i guess? im getting sick having to rev out the 4 banger and it sucks on the highway. im hoping the 4.0 will allow me to at least use 5th and allow me to do 70.
The tyranny will be the hardest part to install :flipoff2:
It is not a cheap swap. Gotta cut out and weld new mounts in. Will need the motor, trans, t-case (unless you want to change the inputs around) and driveshafts from 4.0. Then wiring harness, radiator hoses, heater hoses, power steering lines, etc. Its all the little shit that kills ya.
I did a 318 swap into my 94 and probably ended up about 2k into it, doing it myself. The power is awesome, can cruise up hills at 65 in 5th gear, but it wasn't cheap or easy.
Paying a shop or someone to do it is going to be expensive. Many shops will not do a swap that involves welding. You will have to find a guy who will. Then you are adding a ton to the cost. Used engine cranes are cheap on craigslist. Used welders can be had fairly cheap as well. If you actually want to swap it then buy the stuff you need used. Other than the hoist and welder you just need some normal hand tools. Will save you a ton of money and you will know more about your jeep after you are done. Google it, I would bet there are step by step instructions out there.
Well if you must keep it, I gotta agree with the others and say re-gear it. It will be a whole lot easier and cheaper to have a shop install some 4.88's than a 4.0.
lol...i have 4:88s it just sucks on the highway...and thats here in Fl..i cant imagine what its like in the mountains :shaking:
I understand what i got myself into with this little 4 banger, but the engine wont die :mad3: no matter what i do to it, it keeps clockin along.
The other option i was thinking of is having a shop rebuild the engine for some boost. I was thinking it might be cheaper to boost it with a turbo then it would be to swap out the engine/tranny and change out the input shaft on the transfer case. If i could have 150 rwhp that would be plenty i think.
Can you have a shop rebuild an engine to handle boost????
