97 4cyl TJ stalls during warm up, runs rough
I recently bought a 4cyl 5sp 97 TJ. It starts up and seems to run ok, but then begins to sputter and eventually die within 1 minute after cold startup. It usually starts back up easily, but then goes through the same process again and again.
On a few occasions, it has done the 300rpm barely running sputter deal while I am on the road. I have to give it all kinds of throttle to keep it running, and sometimes it still dies. Last week, it did exactly what I described above, then let off about 5 of the most amazing backfires I have ever heard (then died and would not re-start). I smelled plenty of unburned fuel, and eventuall was able to re-start it by pulling spark plugs and cranking away the excess fuel. Any ideas where to start?

Does it have a check engine light??
-Could be a crank position sensor starting to go -mass air flow sensor -loose throttle body A code will tell you a lot more!
