Pans fit either way the same. You must match the dipstick, dipstick tube and oil pump pickup to the pan you are using. The 4.0l rear sump pan fits fine in a CJ. If you use the original CJ 4.2l dipstick with the 4.0l rear sump pan, the full mark is at 7 quarts. Normal 4.0l pan capacity is 6 quarts using the 4.0l dipstick.
The late 4.0l oil pan is two layers of steel with a layer of plastic in between which cuts down on engine noise transmission. I think the split was in around 1996.
