My ax15 has lost fifth gear wondering if any one has done a swap from manual to a automatic in a late model Cherokee? Can't seem to find a used one any where but aw4 trannies are a dime a dozen north of Chicago. Any input would be helpful.
Went and checked a couple trans shops they start at 500 I could get a whole drivetrain for that with a aw4 still going to look into how much for myself to tear it apart
You'll need to swap your computer. In a 99 the trans is controlled by the ECU, no seperate TCU like the 96 and older cherokees. You will need to make sure you get a 97+ AW4 so that it has the input speed sensor on it.
There's about 30 AX-15 trannys on Ebay, none are real cheap,150-750 bucks plus shipping. You live in a rust state so there must be some on Craig's list.
I don't know, swapping a stick for an auto seems like an extreme solution for a no 5th gear problem.Spend the bucks, replace the tranny with a good AX-15 is easiest.Of course this assumes your Jeep is worth repairing.
i just talked to a guy at a trans shop its getting rebuilt for a 78 ford f250 front with high steer and 5.13 gears with a detroit tru trac figure its a good deal its been sitting for a few months after thinking about it stick is so much more fun
my jeep is beat but with only 90,000 and no rust still worth keeping trying to keep it alive for cheap the ex takes all my money
