1946 crazyj2a build.

My new little project. It's a 1946 cj2a ,original drivetrain. No plans as of yet just other than gettin running decent and riding. Eventually I want to put some wagoneer axles , 5.38 gears, 35 km2's, lockers, power steering, 4.3 vortex, sm420, Dana 300 or 20. Already picked up some used corbeau ss seats.

Picked up some pretty worn boggers . They are 31x12.50x15. Got them for 60 bucks. Needed something that would hold some air.

buy a grooving iron....you can carve those things deep and run them for a long time on a lightweight rig.

Well after doing some looking on this board and a couple others I have this itch to go ahead and build it. Going this weekend to pickup a transmission sm420 with novak adapter to a dana 300. I scored it on craigslist for $225.00. It also comes with the bellhousing, clutch, flywheel, and starter. Also scored a front wagoneer 44 for $100.00 bucks and its got warn hubs already. I already have a rear 44. Im going to ditch the original frame and may try to make my own. Pretty pumped. It will be a long build but will be fun. Im hoping I have learned from some of my mistakes I make on my last build that I ended up parting out. Oh yeah sold the Boggers.

Make your own frame! Its SOOOOO much cheaper than buying one. I should have some prints and dwg/dxf files up soon for the one I am building. So far it fits great buy I don't know about the little stuff yet....

Went and picked up some parts last weekend. The Dana 300 needs a rear output shaft. Other than that I think I got a great deal. The front axle is to wide. Going to sale and get a narrow track waggie 44. Definitely going to build my own frame. Here some pics. Also I have a rear offset Dana 44 axle I'm going to use.

MMMMMmmmmm parts...

Few things I would consider.

-Just build the frame for whatever spring pad width you end up with. I would say with waggy axles just building a wider frame would be MUCH easier than trying to outboard stuff. You would have to trim a few of the mounting tabs on the front fenders ( or lift them ) but overall it would make a few things much easier. You will have to outboard the body mounts a little bit, but again, not a big deal.

-I would use a 5" tall section of tubing for the belly section of the frame. This will make it a little easier to get the belly smooth if you choose to go that direction. A 4" tall belly like I did on mine makes for a TIGHT area to work in.

-With the centered rear output, if you raise the transmission transfer case much you are going to have to make a tunnel in the body for the rear drive shaft.

Good luck with your project!

I started tearing down the old willys last night. I didn't get very far. The stubborn and rusted 65 year old bolts didn't want to cooperate. I decided to cut the bolts but then realized I was out of cutting wheels. I did get the front and the wiring ( what was left anyway) either cut or taken off . I called and got pricing for tubing for the new frame. Here are some pics.

Got the body off the original frame and all I can say is I don't know what I got myself into. Haha. It's gonna be fun.

Looks like another cool flat fender project!

Any thoughts on the frame? I can get you some prints, but to be honest my frame is kinda specialized a bit with the side plates, wheel base shifting, and rear springs up front.

If you tell me what your thinking for a final frame I might be able to help you out a bit more.

All in all the 2x4 box frame is pretty easy to build, you just need a few key points and can go from there. Heck, I think building my frame was one of the easier things I did once I got into things like the rear wheel tub modifications!

Mieser I really like your frame. What will your final wheelbase be. I will hopefully pick up my tubing within the next couple of weeks. It will be 2x4 tubing.

Thanks Mieser. I pmed savaras about the the exact dimensions of his frame. I think the wheelbase I'm looking for is 89-90 inches. I hope to get that or around that.
