Small Dana 18 front output yoke?
Does anyone know if this is a factory 'V6' front yoke for a Dana 18 transfer case? I haven't been able to find a replacement ( spare ) that looked like the same thing....
![]() Advance Adapters has this package.... http://www.advanceadapters.com/products/pn-716009/ ![]() It looks very close in size, but the yoke is a more 'normal' version that looks to be held on by a nut instead of a bolt in the middle of the front output? I dropped them an e-mail to see what they say. I like the idea of having the front u-joint come out with u-bolts instead of having to remove the clips like I do now. Being able to order a spare would be nice for the parts bag....along with like 10 of those little u-joints! And no....I can't really run anything different. The one off custom 1/2" thick adapter makes it pretty much impossible. Anyone have any thoughts?

the factory ''v-6'' yoke uses u bolts to hold the bearing caps in place. spicer part# 5-248x is the part number for the u joint. the bearing caps are 1.062 in diameter and approx. 2 7/16" accross. i believe the front output shaft uses a 3/4-20 threaded nut to hold the yoke on. yours looks like it uses a bolt to hold the yoke on. looks like someone made some modifications to it.

Yup, mine is most likely custom....just like everything else on the dang thing!
I am trying to find out if the 'normal' small V6 yoke will work. I'm going to try and do a rebuild on the D18 with the D20 case I have. It would be the perfect time to change the front output over to a more common unit. Thanks for the help Anyone have a factory 'v6' yoke they can take some pictures and measurements of?

SS Dave, great too hear you chime in. Hope all is well with you. Thought about you when I went by your house the other day.
Meiser: I may have a yoke, but you'll also need a newr front output shaft. Let me look in my secret D18 box when I get to my other house on Saturday. Mine looks like this:

I just need measurements more than anything. The width of the yoke and the distance to centerline from the output housing on the D18 should tell me if I can use one....

went out to my shop and took some measurements for you on a spare d18 i have for my 46 flat fender that i have owned since i was 21 years old.(i'm now 57).i retired it once i finished building the new flatty but can't bring myself to cut it up or part it out or sell it outright to someone.i ran 71 cj5 drive train with the exception of a 283 chevy v-8 instead of the buick v-6 and a sm 420 truck 4 speed instead of the t-14 3 speed. it was common to run the small u joint yokes to help with clearance issues with truck 4 speed or a automatic conversion. the yoke is approx 2 7/8" wide accross the flats and if you take a diagonal measurement accross the yoke it is approx. 3 5/16 inches accross. centerline of output shaft to edge of diagonal measurement would be approx. 1 21/32".hope this helps you.

thank you very much, it sounds very close to what I have now.
Could you measure from the dust cover on the yoke to the centerline? I'm wondering where the joint sits fore and aft. I'm wondering what the heck my yoke is off of? Thank you very much for the help

back to my shop for another measurement. from the dust cover to the center of the bearing cap is approx. 2 1/2". was checking out your build thread-very cool! got quite a few pics of my flatty build in my shop from 8-10 years ago but no scanner or the expertise to post them up here.the shiney flatty is still on a 80" wheelbase. not good for verticle climbs-have to carry lots of spare underwear on a rock run. have you considered a scout 300 case to mate to your 420? 2.67:1 low range and it bolts up to the"texas" pattern the d18 and d20 both have.i run one and like it-but i also run a 4:1 low range kit in it. you will have to run a centered rear d44 out of 72,73,75 early cj5 or in my case i built a centered hi pinion d60 for the rear to help with rear drive shaft angles. anyways- like your build thread-keep up the good work!!!!!

Thank you for the measurement! I will have to see how mine compares this evening.
A d300 like that sounds neat. I have a one off D18 input gear that bolts onto the SM420 output so it limits my t-case choices unless I want to dump a bunch of money into a new adapter. Right now with a D300 style rear output I would have to make a tunnel for the driveshaft in the tub The dropped D18 output helps me out in that respect. Thank you again for the help.

Mieser,
As promised, here are pic's of what's on my Jeep that came from a 225, and a pic of the shaft you'll need. If you haven't already, you should read the page on the Dana 18 on the Novak site. Your's looks really old, and updating with a 20 case, bigger shaft, and bore opening are good things to think about. PM me if you want either of these pieces. ![]() ![]()

That yoke looks like it is a 1310 style? Mine is only 2.5" wide, that one is over 3"? I don't think that one would fit on my funky combo. Thank you for digging it up though.

Something like that might work, but dang I think it would be TIGHT. Anyone have a pic from the top or bottom to see how long it is? Thanks!
