Does anybody have a utility wagon with the barn doors instead of the tailgate? I can't keep mine from rattling. I've tried everything short of welding them toghether.

New to blog

Hey guys, just bought a '51 Wagon body and looking to rebuild it. It's currently just sitting on a '85 Bronco frame but has nothing in it... no motor, tranny, wiring, etc. I'm looking into how I should rebuild it. I want to build a family offroad machine that can comfortably drive cross country and still get thru/over anything. I'd like to keep the main components as "factory" as possible, I want the simplicity of driving to any garage to get it fixed.

Considering building either as a Bronco or K5 Blazer. Both would be pretty close in wheelbase and quite tough. Either want a Ford 302 or 351, or a Chevy 350. I was thinking the easiest and cheapest build would be to just buy a street-worthy truck and swap the Wagon body onto it. What do you guys think?

I'm just a bit overwhelmed with choices... do I want a carb or EFI? I'd prefer Ox lockers, but can't put them in everything (don't want Detroit, and am considering ARB but have had constant problems w/ them in my YJ). Want to run 35's or 37's. Need A/C, and may want front power windows.

Even the body is giving me design headaches... I want to get a more Jeep "open" feel to the Wagon. I was considering leaving the glass in the windshield, tailgate, and 2 side doors. But then I was going to make custom soft windows for the side windows that could be rolled up similar to a Wrangler. Then I was thinking about cutting in a sliding ragtop to really open it all up.

Then I want a custom outer roll cage that would double as my support for a custom roofrack. Want custom rockers, rear bumper w/ tire carrier, etc.

The interior will be simple, custom dash, a lot of diamond plate, rhino linig, and I'll need to fit 3 rows of seats for the family.

Paint will probably be pure white and I want to have real wood on the sides (I know that may have just been blasphemy but I think it'd look cool)

Here's one photo for now, I'll try and make more to record the rebuild.

Please offer as much feedback or advice/opinions as possible!

Thanks, Marty

Ok, how do I post photos here? I've read the instructions in FAQ but there's no "Manage Attachments" button anywhere.

Is that all ? Sounds like it will be a great rig. 500 hours and $10,000 will get you well on your way. Post up what you decide on - a re-skinned Tahoe may be your best bet.

Why Tahoe

That's 2 people recommending a Tahoe. Why that? What benefits would it give me over other closer sized trucks? That's why originally I was thinking either Blazer or Bronco b/c I'd really only need to re-skin that. I wouldn't have to shorten the frame at all.

It would be insane to make a tahoe look like a willys. You'd spend your life and your life savings getting it done. Just SAS the Tahoe and go. 4 doors, not too big, not too small.

Why the LoMax vs. Atlas? Think the one tons are gonna hold up to the 49s?

Well for 1 the LowMax is more in my budget, 2 have you seen the comparison between the gears in the Max vs the Altas? LowMax makes Atlas internals look like lil bitch's. Take a look at JB Conversions.com, and no the stock tons will prolly implode once I get drunk and stand on it and when they do then I will upgrade to better axles ....... Its fun breakin shit!
