I've looked heavy into this and I'll end up going with a 75-81 CJ Dana 30...Discs and 5 on 5.5 and it's only 2" wider than my stock rear end from a 1970 CJ5.
Are you narrowing the 8.8? That should be 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern.
I'd find a YJ and cut the knuckles off and flip the tubes, HP and all that fun stuff. Are you keeping the stock springs?

I'm running a fairly warmed up 283 V8, SM420/Dana 18 with 32's and 3" lift right now, and have wedged the front dana 25 up, dumped the clutch at 2500 rpm just to see if it would kaboom, and it didn't. How heavy is your foot and how big is your power plant?

Will be running a Vortec v6 with a 465 mated to the d18. My foots not that heavy, but my leg cramps once in a while.

You're one lucky guy. I was exploding D25's with 33's and a buick 225.

My .02 Use a CJ D30 and use some adapters or after market shafts in the 8.8 to get 5 on 5.5.

I ran a narrowed scout D44 in mine for a while and it was a pain, wound up switching to a narrowed Chev with the standard mix of chev and ford outter stuff.

Guess that answers 1 question. if the scout idea was good or not.

What is involved in making a Toyota 8" axle working under a stock cj3a ?

Hard to beat the strength vrs weight and cost of the toy axles.

I have no idea what either the stock or toy dimensions are.

Full width springs +running a yota rear.... Unless you can come up with some funkay wheel adapters to run the stock 5 on 5.5 vs the 6 lug.
Gearing doesn't match up with the stock 5.38:1 either

If I used the toy front I would also use the rear and run 6 lug , so that is a non issue.

What is a stock cj3a WMS to WMS ?

If you were to run a dana 5.38 rear gear you could run a toy 5.29 , close enuff for government work

My main point of curiosity is really the width and how close a toy matchs.

51" with a 28" spring perch width. Pass drop so that's a non issue. Also run into issues using the yota rear since all the early stuff had the offset rear diff

I'm running Scout II 44's front and rear, 30 spline. Slightly wider than stock, slightly. You gain disc up front and a larger drum in the rear. Win-Win. Parts are plentiful.

FJ40 axles would be a better choice than toy truck since then the front frame width is the same at 27". If you are keeping the D18 tcase the rear is also passenger drop.

I have also narrowed scout & waggy axles for folks who want to maintain a narrow track. For a wider track without out boarding springs narrowing chevy D44's work well.

Oh my god, I can't even consider putting AMC Jeep parts on my rig, and you guys are talking about using parts from the people we designed it to kick butt on.
I wonder what Mccarthur, Eisenhower, Truman, and Roosevelt would think?
I'm sure it's just me getting older, and I'm not trying to fault anyone here. I just buy American, and Union when I can.
Sorry, just felt it needed to be said.

Is the fj60 front an easy axle to narrow and get axles and lockers for?
