I bought the dom for my cage today. They had 5- 18' sticks of 1.75 x .120 in stock @ $4.05 a foot. I will have to go down and pick it up sometime this week.
I like the cages that have a flat top with an a to c hoop vs side to side. ![]() Is there any reason I should or should not put a side bend in the top of the hoop(the bend just in front of the b post) ? I like the idea of having the cage wider near my head vs running the top straight back from a to c. ![]() link to the build with this cage

Bend the cage to fit arround the lollipops. It's getting rebuilt to fit under my half cab soon here.

Please please please scrap that cage. I know there's not many off road or fab shops in Santa Fe, but we got tons down here in Albuquerque. My cage was ~$500 out the door, I provided the DOM, and it provided peace of mind.

And its hardly 3' of headroom, more like 8"-10" which is actually really nice. Here are a few old pictures when it was first built ~6 years ago. If I was to do it again today it would be different as I have learned alot since then and yes it would be a bit shorter. This was my first cage buld.

mine is very square, made out of 1.5 Chromo, seats attached to cage.
to do it again I'd angle the top in a little. I like Christian Hazels cage. http://www.jpmagazine.com/projectbui..._3a/index.html and Soni's cage http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showt...php?p=12815273 though he doesn't have the cage in it anymore. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showt...php?p=12336558

If mine is such a piece of shit tell me whats structurally not sound on it? Lets see yours? I've been bashing the thing off or rocks the last few weeks and it has not even budged. You don't need a tube bender to make something strong really point out a week point? I challenge you! And just remember I've still got my $500 and piece of mind!

You have to be shitting me!!! WTF is that front hoop! haha yep you can use a bender to put a huge failure zone in your cage you don't have any corner gussets on anything! no center support in your front or rear roll hoop no diagonal support and I really really don't want to see how its connected to the floor!!! hahahaha You sir are an idiot!!!! |

by the way, it's peace of mind. Obviously you don't have a "piece" of a mind.

Are any of my welds sleeved? If you didn't know the answer to this question why were you so quick to criticize?? To answer your question no. Are yours?? Any how I don't see how that is going to help that piece (not peace thanks!) of shit waste of DOM that someone crapped on your rig. Here is the deal a properly built cage will attempt to put as many of the members in tension and compression not bending so that it acts like a truss. For an idiot like yourself this can be simply translated into lots of triangles built with straight members. My cage with the cross in the rear hoop and gussets in the corners are good examples. Another good example is it the way to tall cage pictured above. (maybe the driver is really tall I don't know or care but anyway its built correctly) You shouldn't comment on things that you know nothing about cause it really brings out your ignorance. Bet you miss that DOM and $500 now huh? |

You guys do not like each others cage build, and thats fine. I do not want this thread to be about guys name calling, pissing back and forth about their cages. If you do not like something about someones cage, it is ok to point out the weak point, but do not keep bitchin'.

Well put! I drilled the factory roll hoop and it appeared to be about 2" OD and 0.140 wall thickness so I deemed it to be adequate. It may be 0.120 wall DOM its Hard to tell just drilling a hole but I know its not any thinner than that.
Correct me if I'm wrong but alot of people are building their cages of 0.120 DOM. |
