52 CJ3A Brake Pedal Bushing?
Anyone know if a '52 CJ3A has a brake pedal bushing? My brake pedal has a lot of play but when I took it off the shaft, it doesn't look like it ever had a bushing, nor does it look like there's room for one. The newer CJ5s had a brass bushing.

I don't think they do.
My CJ-2a did not. My replacement (later model, bolt on style) brake pivot bracket did not. I have a manual with a detail of the 2a/3a pedal assembly and it doesn't show one. I replaced all of these parts a few years ago, the new omix-ada parts seemed to have just as much slop as my 60 year old originals. I can't remember now if the original had a second bracket attached to the end of the pivot (over on the brake pedal side). I put on a dual circuit /CJ-5 style master on mine which included this support. This seemed to help tighten things up a fair bit. If yours has the support (it probably does, I just can't remember and I can't make it out in the diagram in my manual) maybe you can pull this back or move it around to take up some of the slop in the system.

Edit: I just found this information. It looks like something that would be very easy to make if I can find the right kind of washers. http://www.cj3a.info/tech/pedalslack.html Last edited by JeepAl; 06-04-2011 at 12:14 PM. |

That's an interesting kit. Gotta love the pricing on that... $2.00 heh heh
I think the part that I was trying to describe is the "tie, bar, master cylinder" You can see it here going up at an angle from the end of the pedal shaft. ![]() ![]() I was thinking maybe you could elongate the holes where it bolts to the master, allowing you to push it aft a little to take some slop out of the shaft. I don't know, maybe it's just better to replace or rebuild the worn parts and/or do the mod that you linked to.

Thanks for the pictures. I was thinking you might be referring to that bracket, or whatever it is called. Yeah, mine has that and the rear hole is even slotted. I'm not sure if it's original or someone else slotted the hole. With a slotted rear hole, you can loosen both bolts and drop the bracket down after removing the cotter pin.
There's a lot of parts involved if you replace all the possible worn parts, as it said in the article, and the main bracket with the hole is riveted and welded to the frame. I think I'll try to make up something similar to the mod I posted. Looks like it would be fairly easy to make. Thanks again for taking the time to post the pics. |

Anyway, I made a homemade kit similar to the one at the other website. It works pretty good. The rings were cut from one inch galvanized pipe which I already had and I already had the square washers too. The bolt is 5/16 but I would have used a 3/8 bolt if I had gone to the hardware store (I already had some 5/16 all-thread). The brown paint is just some primer. ![]() ![]()
