'61 Willys truck my new project

I found a deal that I couldn't pass up. I was searching the local craigslist pages and found a 1961 Willys truck for 500 bones and she is gorgeous. She comes with 2 super hurricanes, 2 transmissions, 2 transfer cases, original axles, a ford 9 inch and a d40(?) for the front. The only original parts that are missing is the seats. I have big plans for the ol gal. She will obviously be getting a new bigger fuel tank and I am contemplating going with a small block if the canes are not salvageable but was told one of them ran when it was pulled. I am really looking forward to getting her home and getting started on her reassembly and getting her in running order. This will be my first full resto project and I will definitely take lots of pics and post up more when I get her picked up. The only rust is on the driver floor pan and the front corners of the cab where the fenders bolt in at the bottom. Sorry about the crappy screenshot pics from the phone I was too excited when I was checking her out to take pics lol. I will post up more when i get her home.

Just gonna throw some ideas out there to see if anyone had any ideas. I was thinking about going rat rod with her for a daily driver well on my trip to and from work every 2 weeks and then my week off lol. Should I go with sbf like a 302 (absolutely love the power, torque, and tone from these) or a chevy V6 like a 4.3 (easy 3 wire hookup)? Gonna keep her a standard and upgrade to a T-5 and a 8.8 or 9" out of a mustang or a ranger should fit and not be too wide. I eventually want to get a 4 link for the rear and put a bagged mustang II setup out front and bag the ass of it. Granted I'm not going to do the ethnic thing and put 22 or 24" wheels on it that looks like crap maybe 18"s with a 50 series at the most. I also want to upgrade the brakes all the way around and ditch the crappy willys brakes because I like being able to stop when needed lol. My plans for her are huge and my budget isn't nearly as big for her as I would like. I also can't wait to get this next week at work over so I can go pick her up and get her home and get to work. The good thing is she is already stripped down because the po was in the middle of restoring her and bought a dodge M37 and focused his attention there now. I would really appreciate any input and let the flaming begin lol

What a sweet find there, I will be watching your build to see what you come up with.

Started picking through the truck today and there is quite a bit of rust in the drivers floor pan but I can always cut it out and put new floor pans in. I also had an idea today and I was gonna see if anyone on here has a Dana 18 with an overdrive assembly. I was wondering what kind of a difference it made and if it actually increased the cruising speed because that would be better than trying to replace the whole drivetrain IMHO. I'll try to get the stuff unloaded from the cab and take some more pics tomorrow.

The T18 with the overdrive is a pretty sweet deal, I've never had one but I did get the chance to drive a jeep with one in it. It bumps the cruise speed up and the RPMS down so your not wasting gas. It is however kinda hard to find one those darn things, I know you can get rebuild kits for them but thats about all. Would love to find an overdrive for my rig as the NP435 is really not a Highway transmission. Anyway good luck on the hunt for that and they make replacement floor pans for these old girls.

I can't wait to get home next week! It's gonna be christmas time all over again! I have 6 or so boxes of parts to go through and a new welder to break in. I ordered floor pans, wiring harness, assorted mounts, new suspension, and a disc brake swap with a new master cylinder. It's driving me nuts knowing that I have new parts waiting in the garage but I'll post up some pics and all that when I get home and get into it.
