Anyone wheel an LR3/RRS
Just wondering if there's anyone who wheels either of these. Youtube seems pretty thin on the ground of descent vids or showing what these vehicles can or can't do.
I know the terrain response works well, but how good are these vehicles out on the trails with their vast bodywork, large overhangs, small wheels and IFS/IRS?? Thanks.

The traction control is amazing, as good as I have seen. It can be close to lockers...but it can be fooled in the right conditions. Wheel travel is horrible and they lift wheels easily. The body clearance and brakes make it difficult to add decent sized tires which ends up being the worst limitation. They are heavy and need big meat.

I have a client who dis-located a CV joint driving across a swale next to his driveway.
Land Rover said it was abuse and result of a torn CV boot letting dirt in. He'd had it in for a 40K service three days before. They eventually fixed it and he bought the extended warranty for it as he's a large animal vet and drives it into fields, pastures, etc and thinks it fits the image of his practice he wants. In his defense, he has a DI that's locked and has a mashed frame rail-I think he wheels THAT truck, not the LR3.

great as a stock truck, but dont expect it to go where a lifted modded disco or whatever can go.

Is a body lift really possible? I don't think so. It doesn't really have a conventional frame.
Stock for stock, an LR3 will blow away a D1/2. But you really can't do a lot to them for serious off-roading. |

What do you mean it doesn't really have a conventional frame?? Why do you think they weigh in the order of 2.5 - 2.7 Tonnes unloaded - they have a huge separate chassis - indeed most major mechanical work requires the body to be lifted off and it is designed for that - everything thing just unclipped and the body can be lifted off by a 2 or four post jack in about 2 hours. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I know it has a frame, but it isn't really "conventional". There's not a straight section of rail on it. That's what I meant.
It appears you probably know more about the situation than the rest of us here. So, would a body lift work? Would the steering shaft stretch that far? etc. Last edited by R_Lefebvre; 10-05-2011 at 05:59 AM. |

I wheel the wife's LR3 a little and it always impresses me.
But, 19" rims don't have a great selection of good AT or MT tyres. You can get 18" wheels but size is still limited. The biggest disadvantage to wheelin these things is the vast weight. The steering is light and nimble and the engine is powerful so you don't really notice it on the road but get into some soft ground or steep hills and it becomes a big problem.
