I parted out my Toyota to buy my Defender. At one point , I had a set of 325-85-r16s, and a hy-steered, 4.10 geared lockered dana 60-14 bolt kit sitting in the yard next to my 90 (leftover from the yota) . I sold the whole setup for 2000 bucks. less than a week later I regretted selling them.

The toyota argument makes sense if you want a stock width and similar clearance with smallish tires. If Toyota axles were the fix-all why do the 'yota guys upgrade to tons at all?

Lastly, narrowing a one ton axle isn't overly difficult, or expensive and there are a number of companies that will cut you a custom length axle all day, everyday.
Thank you, i did want to run 42" tires but i ran out of cash.
I've got a GM corporate 14 bolt sitting in the shop, the GM/Dodge D60 i found was $1000 plus custom fab work for brackets.

I still do all the other stuff, rear axles in 4340, custom axles, mog axles, tube work (suspension and steering) Toy conversions etc.
The Ashcroft kit is probably the best option out there right now, spendy but what can you do.
Got to get over and edit the website.
That's a bummer, man. I'm glad i was able to get them while they were still available though.

Bummer x2. I was just about to hit up Keith on a front axles CV kit as I was going to just go stock Rover in the front.

I have an email out to Lucky8 on the Ashcroft CV's but one of the reasons I was going to stock LR and RovingTracks CV was cost/times I wheel/type of wheeling.

At $1,100 for Ashcroft axles, $500 for a Ashcroft ABT, and another couple hundred to set it up, I'm approaching the Toy conversion cost. Nice thing about the Toy conversion (like I did on the rear) is grab a Disco housing, take my time building it and swap it in a day.

I understand the most diesel/burly/trick/cool setup would be tons but for 35" tire, type of trail, number of times on trail and wanting to keep a mostly stock look I just don't think I need them.

My buddy just ordered a set os Ashcroft's yesterday. supposedly a lot of Rovers on the other side of the pond use them for competition and they do hold up very well. Maybe if i sell the roof rack i'll jump on them before they run out too, lol.

Earlier this year Justin (Lucky 8) got me a set of Ashcrofts (AEU 2522 replacements) for the county front end for 750USD delivered to Australia. He ordered them from Ashcroft on my behalf as there is some BS for getting them direct to Aus from UK without intermediate purchase.

I got the Hi-Tuff Axles from Barry at Hi-Tuff.

Am running the Rover Equiv to the Dana 60 in the rear and no prob to hold the 37 inch Stickies....

would love to get a salisbury for the rear, but my concern is the front CV's. I'm not sure if his cv's arrived yet or not.

Before Keith and Dave Ashcroft started supplying stronger cv's that fit with minimum mods, there were L.R. people on Pirate that were fitting Longfield toy cv's.

The info is in this forum and from what I remember needed axles and drive flanges to suit the cv's, bushes for the stub shafts, and bore the stub shafts a little for the larger shaft of the cv. This last mod was the main reason for Keith and Dave producing their cv's.

Perhaps this is an option to Ashcroft for those in the USA to consider.

John, CV Unlimited was also making Rover type CVs early on...same manufacture as longfields....I even contracted them to make 4 proto types, after Mal Storey tried for over 2 years....I lasted 4 months, paid up front. The guy from CV Unlimited refunded me. He could get no love from Rockford Areomatic.....seems RCV can be very pricky with what they want to do

Haha... glad I saw this thread, seeing as I purchased a set of GBR HD axles that are missing one CV. I figured when the time came to install I could just order a single CV from GBR...

For light to medium duty use (on the Pirate4x4 scale), do you guys have any recommendations beyond what's already been posted? I won't have anything stronger up front than a TruTrac and plan to run something in the 215-225/70-ish range (CT replica-ish build, don't hate)
